ARSON
An elderly woman in South Florida welcomed two men into her Boca Raton home who were delivering a washer and dryer from Best Buy. After one of the men walked outside to call the office, he heard screams come from inside the home.
The man outside on his phone rushed into the home and saw the 75-year-old woman on the floor and covered in blood. The man who discovered the scene called 911 while the other man, 21-year-old Jorge Luis Dupre Lachazo, fled and drove away in the delivery truck.
Boca Raton police found a 75-year-old woman burned and badly beaten when they arrived. A responding officer pulled Lachazo over not far from the scene, according to a report by NBC 6 in Miami. Lachazo was "very sweaty and was shaking, as if he was nervous" as he was taken into custody. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, arson and aggravated battery to a person over the age of 65.
Police found a blood-soaked mallet with a wooden handle on top of the washing machine, which also had blood all over it. A wine bottle was also found in the area.
The woman was taken to a hospital Monday and was being treated for her injuries before she succumbed to them on Tuesday.

I never let sub-contractors into our home if only one person is present.
These greedy fucking companies don't vet sub-contractors

(42,750 posts)It was a few years back but this too was a sub-contractor going to people's homes.
The perverse irony of it though ... he was selling home security systems and he
assaulted the homeowner.

(268,844 posts)If you have unknown people coming to install kitchen stuff, deliver furniture, etc. or work in your home, and you know you will be alone, invite a friend or neighbor over. Do not let strangers in your home if you are alone. Sub-contractors are the worst of them.

(63,221 posts)I just had two men deliver a refrigerator and stove to my apartment a little over a week ago and an electrician into my apartment today to hook up the electric stove (the old one was wired into the wall). I didn't even think about how dangerous it could be.
I live in a concierge building, but if they had wanted to harm me they easily could have and made it out one of the other building exits. I was fortunate in that they were all very nice and I didn't feel the slightest bit threatened by them, but you just never know when you are alone with a strange man or men.
The poor woman. She didn't stand a chance.

(268,844 posts)Find out if the store is using a sub-contractor to deliver and invite a friend relative or neighbor. Be just as wary about the cable folks. I worry less about the technicians because all of us close friends use the same folks for electrical work, plumbing, etc.

(2,955 posts)To do so lessens the accountability for his actions. Drugs didn't make him do this, he did this because he's a sick sadistic freak.

This poor woman never expected a youngster on drugs to beat her to death and burn her.
hlthe2b
(102,188 posts)even people I get bad vibes from cause her no pause. She'd undoubtedly roll over and wag her tail if someone broke in--no matter how aggressively--expecting them to come over and pat her.
Fortunately, people love her back, but I'm on my own.
So...pepper spray on my keychain and a big can of bear spray hidden, but assessible, near the front door.

(26,049 posts)I am also betting the other guy was in on stealing from homes, but not killing. He called 911.

(17,862 posts)Then he falls under felony murder as well. Might not be able to prove it, and it would be a perverse incentive if he is prosecuted after doing the right thing (calling 911).

A Florida Atlantic University spokeswoman said in a statement that Evelyn Udell was a longtime employee of FAU libraries.
Evelyn worked at FAU from November 2003 until April 2018 as a cataloger in the technical services department, the statement said. Evelyn will be remembered as a kind, caring and hard-working member of the staff. The university is devastated to hear about Evelyns passing. We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends and former colleagues.
