Baby elephant's first steps

These are critically endangered species, and captive breeding may be the only way they survive. This little one was born Saturday at a zoo in Belgium. I love how their are multiple trunks tending to him/her.

1. Elephants are very communal with baby care.

It seems they consider it a 'village' effort - I've seen so many videos where multiple of them surround and guide the little ones.

4. I went on safari a few years ago and I absolutely could not get enough watching the herds

of elephants interacting with each other and with their babies. The mamas and aunties and older siblings all worked together to help the littlest ones.

Well, except one hilarious encounter we had with a mama, her baby, and the baby's older "teenage" sister. They were next to the road and we stopped to quietly watch them. Mama decided to cross the road behind our truck to feed on something tasty she spotted, and the teenager followed. But the baby got scared about crossing the road. Mama tapped the teenager with her trunk and I SWEAR you could see the teen roll her eyes and huff her way back across the road to get her little brother. She then kinda pushed him across very impatiently. We couldn't stop laughing at how familiar it all looked.
