More than 100 Mainers gathered at the Portland Public library Tuesday evening and fired off questions about GOP tax cuts for the wealthy, the precariousness of the Affordable Care Acts patient protections, judicial oversight, opioid response, and reproductive rights to an empty chair stationed at the front of the room.
The chair was set out for Senator Susan Collins, who declined an invitation from Sanford resident Connie Garber to come to the public meeting to discuss her voting record. It was the first of two open forums organized by the progressive 16 Counties Coalition and the national Town Hall Project and it showcased the distance Collins has put between herself and her constituents.
The Town Hall Project said it was interested in getting Collins in front of voters because she had not taken questions in an open public forum since early in her senate career. They told 16 Counties director Willy Ritch, a former communications director for Rep. Chellie Pingree, You got to make it a real, open invitation. You got to make it open to the public. You cant limit questions. This has to be the real deal, Ritch said at the beginning of the meeting.
The town hall also previewed some of the issues that may activate progressive voters to turn out against Collins, who is currently seen as one of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans.

(36,655 posts)Susan Collins was a 'right time, right place' candidate...
She was in a three person primary race and so far back she could not even see the other two candidates' tail lights.
The millionaire candidate sponsored an investigation of the evangelist candidate who got run out of a southern state because he was boinking his twelve year old babysitter.
The millionaire denied his involvement but the public turned against both him and the evangelist, leaving Susan Collins as the sole remaining candidate.
