On Wednesday, Denmarks Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made clear she didnt want the U.S. presidents decision to cancel a state visit to Denmark to become a diplomatic crisis. Trump, who axed a planned Sept. 2 trip because he wasnt allowed to buy Greenland, was still welcome to come another time, Frederiksen told reporters in Copenhagen. She also said that the U.S. is one of Denmarks closest allies.
But Trump lashed out later in the day. Frederiksens use of the word absurd to characterize reports of his interest in purchasing Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, was nasty, according to the former real estate tycoon.
Frederiksen says she doesnt feel her words were disrespectful. I dont think I have been blunt or harsh in this discussion, she told state broadcaster DR. I actually think we have responded very nicely from the Danish side. When you are close allies and good friends, like Denmark and the U.S. are, there should also be room for disagreements along the way, Frederiksen said. I hope we can stop this discussion soon.
Trump says he canceled his trip to Denmark, which was at the invitation of Queen Margrethe II, because of Frederiksens choice of words. When they say it was absurd -- and it was said in a very nasty, very sarcastic way -- I said, Well make it some other time, Trump told reporters. Shes talking to the United States of America. You dont talk to the United States that way.

Refuse to credit him with being a real estate tycoon, he's a brass-plated slum lord with mob backing who shouldn't be trusted to develop a Dollar General strip mall.

Republicans are a corrupt and radicalized party.

Again, this man does not like strong women, especially when they publicly don't bow to his will.

Yeah, almost invariably, she did. Because you didn't take "no" for an answer. Because you kept making a nuisance of yourself. Because you didn't just walk away, but you went over to your buddies who offered commiseration and encouraged you to try again or maybe she's a lesbian and why she gotta turn you down like that and doesn't she know who you are. Because you came back from that little pep talk more annoying than before. Because life is too fucking short to put up with that bullshit even once, let alone repeatedly. So yeah, you finally got called "absurd." Deal with it, you big baby.

(59,474 posts)One comment on the article is that the author uses a somewhat subtle way to diminish President Trump. He refers to him as the "former real estate tycoon". I can not imagine that even at GWB's nadir a mainstream reporter noting he was a "former baseball team owner".
Later in the article, Trump equates a comment about something he said to "speaking to the USA". His supporters have long criticized any Democrat, in office, from the Obama administration, or in the media as "unpatriotic" if they disagree with a Trump policy - foreign or domestic. (Somehow their criticism of anything Obama et al did was different or long forgotten.) Not to mention their idea that God chose Trump to be President, ignores they did not think God was involved in 2008 or 2012.
This whole ABSURD episode is troubling because it is so weird, but also because in the aftermath you see that Trump does not see himself as the elected leader of the country serving the people of the country -- who could (and I hope will) vote him out in 2020.
