As in psychosis. Honest question.

(63,837 posts)but if the "he" you are referring to is that POS tRump, yes professionals are saying he is careening toward psychosis.
I wonder if he is hearing voices also. Schizophrenia.

(12,712 posts)I am stumped without inside information.
It seems that his pride is inflating and the hubris is spilling out all over the place as if he is getting a real rush. If he really believes that the recent statements he quoted and his idea of being "the Chosen One" are true, then, well we could call that delusional, but does that matter? At what point would we have been able to truly say that this was a rather rational, sane and intelligent person? When did he drastically change and go over some imaginary line?
However, his despotic and authoritarian behaviors are not new from what we have seen, so as they become bloated and exaggerated, they may seem like crazy to us, but might be normal for him and just a ratcheting up of what's there. I don't think that the position he holds is fully understood by him as far as reach and also responsibilities are concerned, so also factor in some rather extreme ignorance there.

(5,693 posts)His personality has always been narcissistic, self aggrandizing. But when he was younger, he had enough self awareness to not cross into the realm of self parody. He is likely now suffering from cognitive decline, which takes away that self awareness and exacerbates the personality.

(18,837 posts)...and have been showing up on MSNBC. Authors, former Trump employees, etc.
This is who he's been all along.
The difference is that he has no interest whatsoever in doing the job he was elected to do. He doesn't want to learn, he doesn't want to do the job. He wants to "be" a monarch, a dictator, a figurehead, call it what you will.
And no matter how much interference the Republicans run for him, at the end of the day, it still comes down to a job that needs to be done and an elected official who needs to do it.
But Trump himself? Perhaps there is some form of dementia setting in. I'm not a medical professional and obviously can't do a "diagnosis" from my laptop.
Perhaps it's a matter of what's been there all along getting worse in leaps and bounds, but as Muddy Waters said, you can't lose what you never had.

(2,331 posts)Who told the story that when things were falling apart at one of his casinos he was spending his time looking at carpet swatches and bathroom fixtures and wasting money continually refurbishing the place.
He's created a myth about himself that he is some brilliant business person. He was washed up until the Apprentice came out and rejuvenated his brand a bit.

(33,310 posts)He has not reached the stage of Decompensation yet:
In psychology, the term refers to the inability to maintain defense mechanisms in response to stress, resulting in personality disturbance or psychological imbalance.[2][3] Some who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder or borderline personality disorder may decompensate into persecutory delusions to defend against a troubling reality.[4]

(13,461 posts)He sees the stock market tanking, the Chinese pushing back big-time, and probably the outing of Epstein's use of his plane to transport an underaged girl across state lines and he is frantic. I don't think his mental illness is worse, I think he is just getting even more out of control.

(19,972 posts)As some (including Rick Wilson last night) have pointed out, he doesn't have much experience dealing with the real-world pressures that "regular" people have to learn to deal with. The "king" has always lived in his own private bubble protected by great wealth, fixers, lawyers, toadies, (undocumented) servants, etc. Now the real-world pressures of public office are eating him alive and he can't deal with it.

(36,457 posts)But he's never been held accountable for anything he's said or done before. His family's money & influence have bailed him out. Will he be held accountable this time? Time will tell, but he's feeling the heat. He's also a huge fuck-up. Can he keep everything from turning to shit before November 2020? Farmers are mad at him. Truckers are mad at him. Women are mad at him. It's not looking good.
OTOH, he has Russia working for him, or rather against the USA. So we need massive turnout & margins to win.

(12,618 posts)But, I do think he's becoming more desperate, because his act isn't working as well as it was. People are not only tired of him, they're getting bored by him. In the bottomless pit of insanity that is Trump's mind, that's a fate worse than death. He also can't lie his way out of it as he's done in the past. In 2016, he had the benefit of being able to promise things like bringing jobs back to America and massive infrastructure spending. Of course it was always a lie, and nobody with any real brain believed it, but this is America. A good portion of the population doesn't use their brains. Now that none of his promises have come to pass, and in fact, the economy is sputtering with signs of trouble on the horizon, his gig is up. The man behind the curtain has been revealed, and he's a joke. And a bad and unfunny one at that.
I do not believe he will win in 2020. Sure, he'll try and steal it, but he'll lose by a wide enough margin to where that will not be possible.

(2,201 posts)The guy never really had a good grasp of what the fuck was going on....but in the last few days, he's taken 'not knowing what the fuck is going on' to some sort of secret cheat level. The Crazy has been extra strong lately.
What I am about to say is a joke ((a sad, sick, one,..but still a joke (I hope)). trump once said he could shoot somebody on fifth avenue, and not lose support..or something like that. He's proving that true, regardless of whether or not that's what he's trying to do.
I don't know enough about mental illnesses to know if the symptoms can develop this fast.

(36,926 posts)Yes, I know he doesn't officially have that diagnosis, but many mental health professionals have agreed that's his personality disorder.
Malignant narcissism is a hypothetical, experimental diagnostic category. Narcissistic personality disorder is found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR), while malignant narcissism is not. As a hypothetical syndrome, malignant narcissism could include aspects of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) alongside a mix of antisocial, paranoid and sadistic personality disorder traits. The importance of malignant narcissism and of projection as a defense mechanism has been confirmed in paranoia, as well as "the patient's vulnerability to malignant narcissistic regression".[3]

a bunch of disorders/conditions have names that apply to a portion of the above...sociopath, narcissistic personality disorder, etc and they might help some people understand what we are seeing in Trumps behaviors, but I'm not sure we should get hung up on the exact diagnosis. If a person in a leadership role fits the above descriptions, they've already lost it and should be dealt with accordingly. In Trump's case, I'm fine with us non-professionals assuming he fits all of the personality disorders and is a threat to the world.
(Different, if a person is a patient/client undergoing evaluation by a professional. There are things that can be done to help and one would hope they have support, understanding, and the resources to get help.)
