Trump 'hereby' orders U.S. business out of China. Can he do that?

President Trump’s extraordinary edict demanding U.S. companies move out of China — delivered in a series of angry tweets Friday — left industries of every stripe scrambling to understand how seriously to take the order, and how the White House might enforce it.

President Trump’s extraordinary edict demanding U.S. companies move out of China — delivered in a series of angry tweets Friday — left industries of every stripe scrambling to understand how seriously to take the order, and how the White House might enforce it.

She has a meeting next week with an industry colleague to discuss moving more of her operations from China to India or South Africa, she said. “I don’t know how much faster I can move or how much more urgency I can have,” she said.

While the free-market nature of the U.S. economy limits the president’s ability to fully direct industry, trade experts said Trump does have powerful tools at his disposal to encourage compliance.

They include hiking tariffs even higher on imports from China, or accelerating the start date of previously announced tariffs. President Trump could also invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to try to compel departures from China, or punish stragglers by cutting them out of federal procurement deals, economists, lawyers and trade groups said.

“The tweet isn’t entirely cheap talk,” said Derek Scissors, a China expert at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank partly funded by industry.

Wasn't one of her "meetings" with XI to establish trademarks or some type of identification for her products, which had to be OK'd by the government?

Maybe I'm wrong.

Constitutionally, he doesn't have the power to order them to do anything, but he can do a mob-like squeeze on them using various kinds of negative incentives and pressure. Ah, so there is a method in the madness?

That's going to be popular with the business community, I bet.

International Emergency Economic Powers Act, huh? That calls for some looking into. Under what circumstances can that act be evoked? Whatever he can abuse, he will, so it is good to know about it in advance.

"Minions, go find me my powers!"

government interfering with private enterprise is something conservatives supposedly detest.

But like everything else with trumpie, they will look the other way and pretend it's not happening
