The first day of school is way more frightening that it used to be for parents.

(16,071 posts)statistics too many times in my life to ever assume that everything will be OK.
Yeah, probably safe here, but the fact is that it is very likely that there will be another school shooting. Might not be my kid, but it will be someone's kid, someone's partner, parent, friend, or whatever.

(10,417 posts)but thanks to Wayne ThePeter and his ilk, it's just another 9-month season. Gunhumping crazies probably mark it on their calendars next to deer and turkey seasons

(64,852 posts)...since I retired, I did my first day last Wednesday. (High School)
First thing school secretary did was give me the lock down procedure, asked me to read & sign it.
I was there because regular teacher took daughter to first day of 1st grade.
So kids were on their second full day, and I had to sign that procedure.
So, I'm with you.

Seriously, anyone who thinks a kid with a backpack will survive being shot at by a maniac is not playing with a full load. But parents are grabbing onto anything in our insane gun culture.
