‘Imported labor’: Canadian journalist for CBC refused entry to US
by Caitlin Yilek
August 26, 2019

A journalist in Canada said Sunday she had been denied entry into the United States because she did not have a valid visa.

Carolyn Dunn, a national correspondent for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, said she had been told that her travel to Washington, D.C., was “entry into the labor" market and that she’d be “imported labor.”

“I’ve never been pulled aside at a US border let alone refused entry,” she tweeted.

Dunn said in an earlier tweet that she was headed to Washington to fill in for colleagues taking vacation. She shared a link from the U.S. State Department’s website that said Canadian citizens “do not generally require visas to enter the United States as members of the press or media working in the United States.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda do not generally require visas to enter the United States as members of the press or media working in the United States. For more information see information for Citizens of Canada and Bermuda.

Additional resources for Canadian visitors to the United States can be found on the U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites in Canada.

My job in UC Berkeley was to reimburse people for travel on UC business. This also entailed anyone invited to the university to give talks, give a lecture or to do anything involved with the university, including traveling to other countries for UC research. I had to gather all the pertinent paperwork, including passports and visas. Canadians are the only country that can enter the US without a visa.

This is a fact.

Citizens of Bermuda traveling to the United States do not require a nonimmigrant visa for travel up to 180 days, except for the travel purposes described below. Additionally, Bermudian citizens do not require a visa unless they are ineligible for a visa under U.S. immigration law, or have previously violated the terms of their immigration status in the U.S.
