General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just heard a RNC delegate defend voter suppression
He wondered what the hubbub was all about. After all, according to his "reasoning," we show photo I.D to buy bear and cigarettes, so why shouldn't we show photo I.D. to vote?
Someone needs to enlighten this mental midget and others like him that we don't have to buy beer and cigarettes. Voting is a right and essential in a democracy. To lower such a responsibility to the level of buying alcohol and nicotine is unconscionable.
If I don't want to "show my I.D.," then I don't buy cigarettes and beer. But I shouldn't have to show my I.D. to participate in my democracy.
Republicans are still embracing the "I'm ignorant and proud of it" mindset that dominated the 1994 "Republican Revolution."
Oh, and this mental midget needs to learn that "voter suppression" is a manufactured crisis designed to get a political party into power by any means other than their political beliefs and convictions.

(22,336 posts)Voting is a constitutionally guaranteed right. It is not a privilege.

(28,498 posts)And I agree with you, I haven't had to show my ID for quite some time.
But, apparently, he believed we should.
I find it appalling that some Americans believe their right to vote is on par with buying beer and cigarettes.

(478 posts)Please let me be cynical.
Let's change the way the ten year census is taken to only count United States citizens who have proper ID or a proper birth certificate.
Let's not count those who lack a proper ID or birth certificate, who are illegal aliens.
Never mind, it is not as good an idea as it sounds. I bet it will sound good to him.
I bet he would be foolish enough to agree with this idea.
I am well aware the census is used to determine representation in Congress,
and the census is used to apportion federal funds to states.
He doesn't need a representative in Congress. Let's see how he likes that.
If I stop being cynical for a moment, I will point, during the time of Slavery,
the South wanted to count the slaves for purposes of representation in Congress,
even though the slaves could not vote,
while the North only wanted to count people who could vote.
