Drug humor on my mind

Every once in awhile I recall a scene from a movie that strikes me as odd. It was an old silent movie with Harold Lloyd. His car had broken down and he had the hood up and was tinkering with the engine.

A man walked by and stepped into a nearby phone booth. He pulled out his drug kit and injected himself with something. Cocaine? He then left and went on his way.

Harold was now at the point of having to call for assistance. He stepped into the phone booth and found that the last man left his kit behind. Being no dummy, he took the kit and injected the drug into his engine. He then drove off into the 🌇.

This always leaves me wondering how people back then reacted to this scene.

On edit: Harold's Model T goes careening into a "Jones for Mayor" parade!! 🤣

...and this classic scene from Chaplin's "Modern Times"

...and we're led to believe drugs are a 60's thing.
