Over any 4 year period of time, some of us will be better off and some will be worse.

But the United States of America, as a nation, is undoubtedly better off than it was four years ago.

Today, we worry because job growth is not happening quickly enough to provide jobs for all the people who need them. Four years ago were were actually losing jobs and losing them rapidly.

Today, we worry if we'll ever be able to save enough money to retire. Four years ago, the stock market and 401(k)s were collapsing and it looked like the entire financial system might go down the drain. It was so bad, McCain wanted to cancel the debate so he could run back to Washington and .... I don't know ..... panic?

Today, we worry if the tax credits will be enough to help us afford insurance under the ACA. Four years ago, it seriously looked like the health care system was entering a death spiral. McCain's proposal was to tax our employer-provided health benefits.

Today, we complain because Obama continues to order drone strikes abroad. Four years ago, the Bush administration lawyers were drawing up legal justifications for use of torture.

Today, we worry about the undue influence of money on our political system. Four years ago, we had a president who said "This is an impressive crowd -- the haves and the have mores. Some people call you the elite -- I call you my base."

There are lots of things to worry about today. And there are lots of people who are worse off now than they were four years ago. But as a country, we are much, much better off. And we shouldn't forget it.
