RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina university student arrested with guns and ammunition in his dorm room had studied mass shootings and was making plans to kill his roommate and himself if he didn't get into a fraternity, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Paul A. Steber, a 19-year-old freshman from Boston attending High Point University, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two felony counts of having a gun on campus and a charge of making threats of mass violence, the High Point Police Department said in a statement ...

It was also reported that he said he came to NC because it was easier to buy guns here than in other states.
He must be talking about long guns, since hand guns require permits, background checks, etc.

If you buy a long gun in a private sale, no background check is required.
I have purchased shotguns locally by private sellers and offered to show them my ID, and all they wanted to see was the money.

Proof of who I was, which wouldn't tell him much.
I don't own handguns, so I've never gotten a permit.

Extra security at the schools here today.

Rumors of a school shooting have led to an alert. The police have said not to worry that it's likely nothing and just rumors.

Goddamn this is scary in my bones. We should not be afraid to send our children to school.
