LAS VEGAS For the second time this month, commissioners in a rural Nevada county have pre-signed an emergency declaration ahead of the "Storm Area 51" event that's drawn more than 2 million RSVPs on Facebook.
On Wednesday, Nye County commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the declaration in preparation for the mysterious affair that could draw thousands of curious visitors to the desert.
Commissioner John Koenig confirmed the board passed the pre-emptive declaration, but he declined to comment, directing all questions to spokesman Arnold Knightly.
The USA TODAY Network could not immediately reach Knightly for comment.
California resident Matty Roberts created the event called "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us" in June after listening to an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. The tongue-in-cheek event scheduled for Sept. 20 quickly generated millions of accepted invitations.

(62,444 posts)...in the event that people show up, not understanding it was a joke that has gotten out of hand. Alien-related business has increased, and there is no reason to believe that people arent going to show up, regardless of what the original intentions were.

(535 posts)People are in for a shock when they see what happens when trying to storm a US military installation.

(951 posts)Do they have any idea how many ways they can stop all of them?

(535 posts)I truly hope, for their sake, that they don't actually try.

(7,808 posts)On the plus side, once people hear the shots and a few dozen of them are down, the rest will scatter.
Still, why do people have to believe the unbelievable? Is it so hard to understand that a remote location like that is perfect for experimental aircraft? Why do they insist that aliens are in there?

If Area 51 really is hiding any aliens, Bud Light is ready to welcome them with open arms and a cold beer.
Anheuser-Busch is jumping on the recent interest in the Nevada base and supposed UFO hotspot. At first, Bud Light joked on Twitter that it was the first brand to formally announce that we will not be sponsoring the Area 51 raid.
On Wednesday, it changed course, offering free Bud Light to any alien that make it out.
The beer company wasnt stopping there. It later tweeted out a photo of a special edition Area 51 can. Bud Light said it will release the new alien cans if the photo gets 51,000 retweets.
As of Thursday evening, it had been retweeted nearly 18,000 times.

(96 posts)few hours away. I'd like to drive over to see any commotion but would hate to get caught up in any bs. The area is very remote. Rachel's website tells it like it is.

If anyone goes bring everything you need to survive for the time you're there and I mean everything (rest room). I believe that the town is on well water and septic systems only. They may not share.
It'll be interesting to see what happens.

If you are driving, you better have 10 gallons of extra Fuel with you cause it is one hell of a long drive to the next fill up. Better yet,go in October or November when the Idiots will all be gone.

(5,499 posts)My teenage kids (son especially) thinks this is hilarious because the people storming area 51 are suppose to naruto run as they do it.
I don't think their are aliens there (or anywhere else) but I do think there are probably some interesting experimental aircraft.

(90,562 posts)...declaring UCSB's student Halloween revels in Isla Vista to be the best place in the nation to get wasted in October. It was a nightmare that took a good 10 years to quash. After the first year blindsided the community -- it was NOT Woodstock -- the crowd control involved "mutual aid" reinforcements from sheriff's departments in other counties, street blockades, identity checks, and notifications to every college in the state that visitors were not welcome at Halloween.
"These rednecks" are right to be wary of a joke gone viral in this day and age.

(999 posts)It's all fun and game, until people realize that the Air Force is authorized to use deadly force to protect the base. Not only does that include live ammunition, it also includes possibly calling in close air support units if the forces on the ground are in danger of being overwhelmed by attackers.

(999 posts)that means AC-130Us. That means 105mm cannon, 40mm cannon and 25mm cannon. Not even Naruto can even think of outrunning any of that kind of firepower. Again, it's all fun and games, until people really try to storm the base and realize that the Air Force wasn't kidding when they said it was a "bad idea", and that they are fully authorized to use lethal force to protect the base.

(28,979 posts)Even the Soviet Union fell when soldiers would not shoot citizens.
Seriously, I do not believe anyone is going to go to Area 51 other than in their imaginations, but I am alarmed that so many on DU defend the idea of the military taking out citizens with lethal force.
Welcome to Amerikkka.

(999 posts)attempt to storm a secret military installation. The security forces don't care if they're American citizens. Intruder are intruders, no matter if they're Americans, Australians, or Martians. If they stay on their side of the fence, that's cool, But the first time someone crosses the fence and ignores warnings to stop, the security forces CAN and probably WILL use lethal force and would be perfectly justified in doing so. As I said, the Air Force announced that storming Area 51 was a "Bad Idea".
Security forces are almost always deadly serious when on duty. They can't afford to be otherwise. Anyone who thinks they can play around with them or make threats against whatever they're guarding (real or joking), is in for a rude shock, no matter who you are.
