(5,810 posts)Come in real handy when youre going on three days without a bath, the temperature is 92 and the water pressure is so low theyre asking you not to run any water. Just being able to get some of the sweat and scum off is refreshing and makes things a tiny bit more bearable. Im a veteran of many, many hurricanes over my 70 years so Ive learned a few things. I also know youll walk across broken glass and hot coals for something cold to drink after a few days of warm coke or room temp water. 😖🥴😵 It really is no joke...no laughing matter. If you can keep some hoarded ice handy, it might save your sanity. 😉😉😉

(5,810 posts)Is catching up all the laundry. Clean sheets, all the towels and wash cloths, plus every stitch of clothing so we start out with everything clean. Make sure there are plenty of clean shorts and tee shirts because it is going to be hot. I also try to vacuum the house because it may be days and days before that can be done again. All the dishes need to be washed, too. Start out with everything clean.
Then I make food to eat during and after the storm. It may be a big pot of something or plenty of sandwich makings. Since the power could go out early in the storm, it is good to have something ready to eat.
Im a veteran of many storms so I have a list in my head of what matters to us and what things will make our experience a little better. Not easy. Just a tiny bit better. My heart goes out to those in the path of Dorian. 🥰🥰🥰

(14,854 posts)Ice cubes melt way too fast. Make blocks, the bigger the better, they last a long time.
You don't have to fill the tank to flush your toilet. You can just pour water from the bucket directly into the bowl and it will flush. One gallon will usually do it.
On my to-do list is a trip to the library, to check out a stack of books.
