Some items on my hurricane/blizzard survival list

Solar-powered battery charger for cell phone.

Battery charger for car that has a USB and a 12-vote cigarette lighter plug - to charge cell phone and other devices.

Solar/crank powered flashlight - 2 headlamps - one baddass high-power D-cell flashlight.

3 solar powered lanterns (one to use at night - 2 to charge in day).

Solar-crank weather-AM-FM radio/light

A hand-pumped "mister" - sprays water mist to cool you off when AC is down.

Battery powered D-cell fan to use with mister at night.

Home-built 1990-vintage solar D-cell charger for rechargeable D-cell batteries (for D-cell fan).

Three 7 gallon water containers.

Enough 5-day coolers for perishable freezer/fridge food , if and when ice becomes available.

3 plastic trash cans for "toilet flushing water" and 5-gallon buckets.

Camp stoves and fuel.

Paper plates and plastic forks/spoons/knifes, toilet paper, LOTS of paper towels

Lots of trash bags.

Gatorade, Clif bars and MREs

1 ounce of Lebanese Blonde, 2 dime bags of primo - and LOTS of munchies (just kidding!!!!).

I miss not having a battery operated TV that could pick up local analogue TV

I've been seriously without after hurricanes - but never again.

Nope

One sativa, 2 full hybrids, two half carts of strong Afghan Moon and 9lb Hammer, half a dozen prerolls, some capsules, a stick of magic butter, a dugout that I filled last night.

Christ, I'm a degenerate!

More importantly (?), I've got burgers, brats, dogs, and sandwich fixins in various states of frozen state. A propane camp stove, charcoal smoker, gas grill, two charcoal grills.

We're heavily armed as well. My culdesac has two retired Marines, one police detective, a wine store manager, and a whatever the fuck I am.

Come in real handy when you’re going on three days without a bath, the temperature is 92 and the water pressure is so low they’re asking you not to run any water. Just being able to get some of the sweat and scum off is refreshing and makes things a tiny bit more bearable. I’m a veteran of many, many hurricanes over my 70 years so I’ve learned a few things. I also know you’ll walk across broken glass and hot coals for something cold to drink after a few days of warm coke or room temp water. 😖🥴😵 It really is no joke...no laughing matter. If you can keep some hoarded ice handy, it might save your sanity. 😉😉😉

Is catching up all the laundry. Clean sheets, all the towels and wash cloths, plus every stitch of clothing so we start out with everything clean. Make sure there are plenty of clean shorts and tee shirts because it is going to be hot. I also try to vacuum the house because it may be days and days before that can be done again. All the dishes need to be washed, too. Start out with everything clean.

Then I make food to eat during and after the storm. It may be a big pot of something or plenty of sandwich makings. Since the power could go out early in the storm, it is good to have something ready to eat.

I’m a veteran of many storms so I have a list in my head of what matters to us and what things will make our experience a little better. Not easy. Just a tiny bit better. My heart goes out to those in the path of Dorian. 🥰🥰🥰

Supplies for a ten day hike, if we want to stay it's easy peasy but we can get far enough outside NYC if need be.

Ice cubes melt way too fast. Make blocks, the bigger the better, they last a long time.

You don't have to fill the tank to flush your toilet. You can just pour water from the bucket directly into the bowl and it will flush. One gallon will usually do it.

On my to-do list is a trip to the library, to check out a stack of books.
