My parents fit into that demographic of older nevada folks who are staunch rethugs (my mom is actually a very quiet dem, but my dad is sadly fox-brainwashed)
They have made friends with a older couple who just moved into their neighborhood, both very republican. She happens to be the pres of the womens group in carson, and has tried to get my mom to go and she flat refused.
last night they were at dinner and the wife left the room, the husband and my mom started talking religion and he admitted he didn;t like the idea of voting for a Mormon. He would rather vote for the black guy than the mormon.... turns out, it's more than just this guy. He told her many of his rethuglican friends have the very same reservations. And the Convention didn't change that....
Also, a side note...my mom also shared this morning that her family back in Mississippi (who are very much still fighting the civil war in many ways) are saying the same thing.... apparently Mormonism is as bad as devil worship to southern methodists, and even though they are prejudiced, they would rather vote for the black guy too...!
Not saying this is a national trend....but it's good to keep hearing these feelings of dissent and dissociation among their base....Maybe this is WHY they are avoiding the religion question altogether, because it is worse for them.

(46,086 posts)While I don't mind if any republican votes for Obama, it's fine with me and I don't care what the reason is, what if the Mormon candidate is a democrat or someone I supported and that was the only reason why another dem wasn't voting for him/her. What I'm saying I wish the republicans were both voting against the republican party package and voting for the democratic party based on the issues, not a religion.

(35,015 posts)he's held very high positions in the Mormon church....and still very much a part of it.
To me, it's relevant because he's not just a parishoner.

(13,360 posts)Yet another issue where Romney would like to use his 'status' as a plus or a reason to vote for him....and yet he can't, it's actually a liability.
I still think the Taxes and Bain issues are better reasons NOT to vote for him....but if this works too, glad it's happening....especially without anyone publicizing it.

(50,557 posts)He has been a Bishop and a Stake President.
The Bishop is the unpaid leader of one congregation, which in Mormonese is a "ward." (Wards just have a couple hundred people in them.) Every LDS male must be prepared to become a Bishop.
Stakes are groups of between 5 and 15 wards led by a stake president. This man doesn't get paid either. Not sure how stake presidents are chosen, but they probably pick the most devout of the bishops in the stake and elevate him.

Makes you wonder what else Romney would use his religion to excuse.

(11,101 posts)They are by nature authoritarian or they wouldn't be attracted to the Republican Party to begin with. They always fall in line. If they vote, they will vote for Romney. The hope is they won't vote. To the degree that there is anti-Mormon sentiment among voters who don't self identify as republican it could make a difference, but I don't think it's a very large demographic.

(18,048 posts)That's why they look so ridiculous right now.
I grew up hearing from ultra-religious relatives/adults that Mormons were flat out nutjob cultists just like Scientologists.
That is why I was surprised this party would nominate him.
I wonder if religious conservatives who take their religion "serious" will just stay home, and I wonder if anyone in the campaigns are expecting them to.

(13,360 posts)...my mom says both Catholics and Mormons are on that shit list, but what's even funnier is that they are not as 'afraid' of the black man as the guys in congress would hope. I personally think most people on that right side are more rational than the crazy shooter types we've seen. So they are actually not going to stay home, because they value their RIGHT to vote as much as anything...so they are purposefully giving the vote to the black guy...because he's less of a threat than the mormon, which is a real hoot to me.

He lies like a sociopathic pathological liar. It's freaking CREEPY. The opposite of "not so bad".

(27,711 posts)Ryan and the convention have distracted from the religion issue with their base, but it's not going to go away, and it will only take one small slip to bring it to the surface.
