I hate to say this, but I'm feeling kind of blasé about all the shootings in America. They just keep going on and on, and nobody can do anything to stop them. Congress is too feckless to stand up to the NRA, and there's a certain element to our society that thinks we need more guns on the street, not fewer. And don't give me any bullshit about mental illness. Every country in the world has mental illness; only in America are gun deaths part of our culture. I've just resigned myself to the fact that mass shootings and other gun deaths are here to stay.
Time to change the channel and watch Singing in the Rain.

(9,999 posts)My outrage meter has been fried. The daily insanity between mass shootings and Trump's "stupidity du jour" has left me numb. This election cannot get here soon enough.

Being in farm country, I'm gonna say what they say about the farmers who are in a world of hurt because of the tariffs: No sympathy. You voted for the mofos who gave you these laws....
The shootings in West Texas took place a day before a series of new state laws easing gun restrictions were set to take effect.
The new laws were passed in August and will go into effect Sunday, September 1.
Among the new laws:
House Bill 1143 says a school district cannot prohibit licensed gun owners, including school employees, from storing a firearm or ammunition in a locked vehicle on a school parking lot -- provided they are not in plain view.
Senate Bill 535 clarifies the possession of firearms at churches, synagogues or other places of worship. It allows licensed handgun owners to legally carry their weapons in places of worship.
House Bill 1387 loosens restrictions on how many armed school marshals a school district can appoint.
House Bill 302 bans homeowners or landlords of rental property from prohibiting residents from lawfully possessing, carrying, transporting or storing a firearm or ammunition on the property.
House Bill 1177 prohibits residents from being charged with a crime for carrying a handgun while evacuating from a state or local disaster area.
House Bill 2363 allows some foster homes to store firearms and ammunition in a safe, locked and secure place for personal protection.
The NRA informed their members of the new laws on Thursday, stating that the bills were protecting your second amendment rights.

We are the country we've chosen to be.

If we're not serious about taking the guns away, then there's no reason to be shocked at a new mass shooting.

(6,011 posts)I've heard all of the arguments against my stance ad nauseum.
I no longer care about the feelings of those who oppose my stance on this.
I've been a victim of gun violence. 41 years ago I was shot in the head by a street gang member. I was "lucky". All I lost was an eye.
Being armed would not have helped me. It was a surprise attack.
Our nation has a sick, twisted firearms addiction, on many levels, that needs to be wiped out of existence, using any means necessary.
It won't happen for a long time, but I'm behind anything that brings that about.
