Simply fuck all of that shit.
The DNC should be unique, compassionate, truthful, spontaneous, loud, emotional and FOCUSED!
Everything that the RNC wasn't.
No need to pay any attention to the lame stunts of Eastwood and the incompetence of Romney and the RNC. The Republicans were fools to screw up the introduction of Romney.
We need to express ourselves as Democrats in our own way, let the country FEEL that we are the ones who are the adults in government's room.
Let the RNC's complete derailment pale in comparison to Democratic organization.

(15,359 posts)We're having a good laugh at Clint and the entire convention, but when it comes down to ours, we need to go after the GOP based on policy and truthfulness. We don't want to come off as "kicking an old man," even if it is Clint Eastwood.
Let's face it - for whatever reason, republicans can get away with being assholes - remember all the purple bandaids convention-goers wore at the 2004 RNC to mock John Kerry's military service? If we tried something like that, we would be crucified. We have to take the high road.

(20,234 posts)negotiate drug prices. Remove the age limit on Medicare.
Pay for it all with a Financial Transactions Tax on wall street, one they are not allowed to pass along to the general public.
Real clear populist plans that we enact along with Public financing of elections,
Universal free public education at ALL levels,
a guaranteed minimum income for everyone,
Paper ballots and hand counts,
a progressive federal tax that increases at least 1% for every $100,000/year and treats investment income the same as ordinary income,
An end to all the flat earth "free trade" deals that place corporate profits over human rights,
pass a law removing any "human" rights from corporations and forbid the SCOTUS jurisdiction over all such laws,
That will be a nice start.

(39,909 posts)Sounds like a great start to me too.
The Republicans lurch to the Extreme Right at their convention has given the Democratic Party room to take a step back to the Traditional Moderate Left.
Among these are:
*The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;
*The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
*The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
*The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
*The right of every family to a decent home;
*The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
*The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
*The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being."--- FDR

(6,856 posts)The spectacle that was the RNC was long on promise and platitudes, and short on ideas. It was a spectacle, as scripted by people who don't even know what good entertainment is. I think Barney Frank said it, "politics is show business for ugly people."
Which means the RNC's rush to be slick and scripted fell so flat on its face, it is notable for its ineptitude.
Conversely, Democrats actually have good ideas and programs, not just hype and a slick presentation like the RNC.
I mean, really, did the RNC think they can produce a television spectacular better than the Democrats in the media business who invented television spectaculars? In television language, bringing out a respected actor like Clint Eastwood and allowing him to make a fool of himself was the RNC "jumping the shark."

(14,230 posts)So maybe I'm not understanding it. You don't mean minimum wage, you mean guaranteed income whether someone works or not, right? If so, where's the incentive to work, and how can we afford this?
Vincardog
(20,234 posts)Do you assume that people are so laze that they have to be forced to work?
The incentive to work is to be of benefit to your community and do things you enjoy doing.
We pay for it with the Financial Transaction Tax.
Plus the economic activity generated by everyone having a living wage would generate more than double the tax income for the government.
It would generate sales taxes for the local government.
It would create jobs created by the additional demand, those jobs would create additional income tax for the states and federal government.
It would be what stimulus is supposed to do, get people money to spend,
infinitely more effectively than giving money to the banksters.

(17,064 posts)Dems can do humor much better than reps, because there is empathy and connection with ordinary people. Dems can poke fun of the RNC debacle and still use it as a vehicle to convey their message.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,154 posts)It doesn't have to be in the bumbling unhumorous and angry way that the Repubs are good at, but they MUST refute all the lies in some way. Like you inferred, they could do it in a humourous way. I'm sick of the Dems attitude that "people are too smart to believe in those lies" ....ah....no they are not. Especially when the MSM continues its tired predictable arch that if the Repubs are "mis-speaking" (never lying) surely the Dems are just as guilty.
I understand that any rebuttel cannot look overly defensive, and they cannot spend too much time on it, but a comical brief shoot-down of every one of the Republican lies about them should be addressed before moving on to what the Democrats actually DO stand for.

and have someone (like Sen. Franken) ask the suit questions about the flip flops and lies. Then the suit shakes the etch a sketch over it's head (if there were a head). With each question the thing shakes harder, then with two hands, then the whole body gets shaking and finally it falls over backward.
It should be done on day 1 or 2 and during the day. Doing it in prime time on day 4 is not an option.

(14,230 posts)People who already hate Republicans might love it, but it will seem petty and condescending to the disaffected Republicans and independents we need to win over. Plus comedic timing is damn near impossible in a stadium. I say better to present our ideas competently and with substance, something the RNC never did, and let voters see the contrast for themselves.

(285 posts)Any one get creeped out by the expressions on the faces of the delegates and other attendees? The mixture of anger and glee on their faces at the same time was frightening, and just weird. The joyful way they dived into hating the on president and others they see as "against real People, and freedom".
The very words bold, failure, and built have been kicked to death by misuse. The language used when talking to reporters, the uncanny way they are never swayed by fact, moved by compassion for others, or ever stray one iota from the party line was chilling.
And the complete ease of telling flat out lies without worry of any consequence was flabbergasting!!! Whenever they get started on Obama sometimes, I flash back to behaviors I witnessed in my school days ,by bullies and mean girls, when threatened by someone different. Even when questioned directly on the platform plank divergences by Romney/Ryan on abortion conveniently in time for the election was not enough to sow dissension.
But, you have to admit, they get their agenda across. Look at the damage the Tea Party has done in a few short years, to our politics, credit rating, the respect we have lost in the eyes of people all over the world. You got to wonder, do the Democrats need to turn into mindless storm troopers to get the support of the majority and FINALLY get some real things done to better our country's situation in real concrete way?
Please Visit me at http://livenudepolitics.com/, I would appreciate it.

(14,154 posts)I always remember this picture from the 2004 election of a Bush supporter in the audience basically worshiping him with that mindless adoration. Can't find it now.
Mitt doesn't generate that same religious fervor, but you are right in your analysis of how thirsty they are to drink their own koolaid, spiked with lies or not. They even can put out of the picture the last Republican President. He was a two termer, in any other situation or country, that implies a successful run. Of course we know why he isn't there, he's an embarrasment and an idiot and is a reminder of things that could become talking points for the media, like how he took a surplus and then trippled the debt or that he would be a reminder of how the Republican failed to get Bin Laden, and under his watch a near depression happened. etc...
But its amazing how the righties can conveniently forget the past and re-invent the present.
That's why it is doubly hard for the Democrats. They know that not only their supporters and independants will react negatively to ANY fabrication, but also the MSM News will always come down much harder on the Democrats for doing that than the Republicans. Its almost accepted by the MSM that Republicans will lie. Its infuriating but its as if, like bad parents, they just throw their hands up and refuse to deal with it.."Oh Johnny, that's just the way he is"
Its tough to fight against that other side that can invent a fantasy world where Obama is raising taxes (instead of what he's doing in lowering them) or that he's a socialist (for giving the private insurers cart blanche and initiating a program invented by the Heritage Foundation and implemented by Mitt himself) and instead imagine a future without taxes and yet still be able to have all their amenities that they are used to.

(2,198 posts)Not lies, misrepresentations, and blatant nastiness. I would like to hear the President admit that things are not where he thought or hoped they would be and that he made a huge mistake thinking that he would be working with a Congress that really wanted to help the country get back on its feet. He should admit that he was naive enough to believe that officials ELECTED to represent the BEST interest of the people THEY SERVE. But he hopes that voters will admit their own mistakes in electing people whose only interest was a political agenda that ignores the best interest of those they serve. And that he hopes the voters will re-elect him with a Congress that is willing to set aside personal political and group political agenda and work with him to move the country FORWARD.
That would be my dream speech...but I know he will not embarrass the voters that way.
