G.E. Smith, the former Saturday Night Live bandleader who headed up the musical entertainment at the Republican National Convention, says he is not in fact interested in politics.
"I have absolutely no idea what they are talking about," Smith told The Hill, as his band was packing up their equipment.
For Smith, the convention was simply a gig for a professional musician: "We're like Doctors Without Borders. We go where the need is greatest."

(41,959 posts)When you're in the arts you generally take the money. I sell books to conservatives all the time. I put up with beurocrats wanting me to edit and I do it if it's not important and never if it is. It's harder when your art is out there for all to see.

(22,871 posts)based on how they look and carry themselves, that's how I have always felt about this guy. If he was at the DNC convention I would feel the same way. There's something about how smug he looks all the time that bothers me.

The musician's union is just another way to neutralize the social and political power of music.
