During today's The View, Meghan McCain went off on Democratic politicians proposing "gun grabbing" legislation to ban semi-automatic assault weapons and claimed gun owners will resort to violence against the federal government as a response.
She said that with nary a care, no concern at all. As if an insurgency by gun owners was perfectly reasonable. How many lives of law enforcement is she willing to sacrifice just so Wyomingites can have their semi automatic weapons of mass murder?
The gun control topic was a long segment on The View and McCain had practiced her talking points well during their vacation.
McCain opened up by saying as "the chick on the panel who spent most of her break shooting" she looked forward to this discussion.
Meghan claimed Americans do not know what the difference is between a regular handgun and a semi-automatic assault weapon. Kellyanne Conway would be proud.
She said, "The bureau of the ATF doesn't define the term assault weapon so that can basically mean any gun other than a musket."
She attacked Beto O'Rourke specifically because he has a plan that doesn't pussyfoot around since Texas is leading the way with mass shootings. Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government.
The AR-15 is by far the most popular gun in America, by far, she reminded everyone.

(2,768 posts)of guns are either violent and/or insane. So because insane people are going to use those guns on civilians, because you sure as fuck know they aren't going to shoot at people equally as armed, we shouldn't take them away from them. Yea, that makes a whole lot of fucking sense.

(73 posts)Public discourse now jumps to extremes, e.g. If you ban assault rifles, there will be violence / a civil war / insurgencies everywhere!
Can we get real for a second? None of these things are going to happen. Even one or two or twelve psychos reacting violently to a ban would not equal a full blown conflict, or even violence. To hint at this possibly happening is an absurdity that belongs in dystopian fiction.
Were getting caught up in hysteria, and this is an example of it.

Sales of new MSSAs may be "banned" in some far off hazy Liberal dream, but that doesn't stop Gunservatives from equating that with 100% confiscation. Slippery Slope fallacy.
What Beto is proposing has zero chance of happening until Lapierre is 6 feet under, if ever, and he knows it. No one knows who has what. It's a practical impossibility, like deporting 12 million "illegal" immigrants.
No doubt, there would be violence if Confiscation is enacted. Gun Owners of all ages and races have already demonstrated that they're violent.

(972 posts)If almost everyone turns them in we can easily get the holdout. If 5, 10, 20 million don't then what are you going to do? You gonna put 10+ million people in prison? You better start building prisons now in anticipation of that. Not to mention the log jam that it will cause in the courts. I don't think there will be war in the streets, although I'm sure some will, but I do think there will be massive non-compliance.

(19,224 posts)A few states have banned features commonly found on AR's such as flash hiders and high-capacity magazines,, but the guns are still legal in every state, even New York and California. And if those states can't get an all-out ban, I doubt we'll get one on a federal level.
Even the 1994 AWB didn't actually ban them.

As an aside, military 5.56mm FMJ is a much less lethal round than any civilian .223 hunting round due to the Geneva convention. It is a war crime to give soldiers civilian hunting ammunition.

(3,477 posts)PPG SAR correctly, that would include AK variants of both foreign import origin (approximately 2 million from China although accurate totals difficult to track down) and domestic manufacture, FALs, etc. Several million more perhaps. As an anecdote, I bought a Steyr Maadi AKM in 1983. Back then AKs were expensive novelties which attracted quite a bit of interest on the shooting range. Fast forward to 2019, my US 1898 Krag attracts a lot of interest on the range because a large percentage of other rifles there seem to be one or another variant of AR or AK.

A Las Vegas concert. An Orlando nightclub. An elementary school in Newtown, Conn. A Texas church. And .. a high school in Parkland ...
America's most popular weapon was there for all of them.
AR-15-style rifles have increasingly appeared in American mass shootings ...
The ability to add a high-capacity magazine to the rifles is certainly one factor that makes them attractive to people looking to commit mass murder. A 30-round magazine is fairly standard with MSRs (although some states cap the capacity to 10 or 15 rounds), but "drums" holding as many as 100 rounds are also available ...

(8,908 posts)You can't fight the federal government. Not and win. Their little wet dream "civil war" will be over as soon as the police arrive and >99% of these morons will go home bitching. The other <1% might end up like this brilliant gun toting individual who decided to threaten the government with his guns.

So,
1. Ban the sales and/or ownership of the the assault weapons and the high capacity magazines and set a deadline to return them in a buyback program. Set up redemption centers and give them a receipt for a tax credit.
2. Thereafter, make it a felony to be caught in possession of one of these illegal items, with a mandatory minimum one year in a federal penitentiary.
3. As extra incentive to take advantage of the buyback program, set up a hotline to turn in people who are known to still be possessing these instruments of death, with a reward for each successful conviction.
This will give them one chance to either get money for their weapons or forever start figuring out where they are going to hide their newly illegal contraband and risk prison if caught. In the meantime it will become much riskier for them to ever leave their homes carrying these things with them out into the public. They will have to lock them up out of sight of everybody.

And if she's correct in her assertion that AR15 owners will become violent, then they too need to have their guns taken until they're fully cleared by a panel of mental health professionals. Rethugs always blame shootings on mental illness. Ok, here's your chance to take meaningful action.
