(22,418 posts)We've had our first Tornado. It touched down in Brunswick county. The warnings started before daylight for tornadoes. The rainbands are coming through with some being thunderstorms. The wind is light overall but the thunder is low and rolling, like nothing I have heard before.
I have plenty of provisions. Thinking about putting a roast in the crock pot.

(267,823 posts)Some homes and other structures were damaged by possible tornadoes in Brunswick County on Thursday morning.
The Brunswick County Sheriffs Office posted video and photos of damage at a neighborhood called The Farm, the Crow Creek area and along U.S. 17.
The Farm community is located at Carolina Shores, just off U.S. 17, north of Calabash. Homes in that neighborhood showed major damage with some houses missing part of their roofs. Fences were torn away and other debris littered the area.

(22,418 posts)They frequently fly by here. Occasionally touching down with expectedly disastrous results. One of my friends lost her son a few years back when one destroyed his home. Very sad.
I've been close enough to see them literally fly by. Bricks flying through the air defy description. I watched one come down the corn field, then fly straight up one year.
Rains getting heavy now. More later, hopefully. ❤

(267,823 posts)but didn't know one associated with Dorian had touched down.
Losing family to natural disasters is horrific.
I've never experienced a tornado.

(32,061 posts)I'm about 100 miles inland. All we're getting here is some clouds and 15-20 mph winds. We could sure use some of that rain here. Haven't see more than a half an inch in over the past several weeks.

(267,823 posts)hurricanes. We'd pay for five days of rain.

(58,785 posts)skip the tornado but enjoy the unusual low and rolling thunder from a hurricane in the distance.
Enjoy your roast if you go that way.

(4,649 posts)Bands of heavy wind and rain, punctuated by breaks. They're telling us it will get worse this afternoon before it gets better. Major storm surge expected along the beach with the close approach of the system and high tide...

(31,319 posts)We're in the area for tropical storm warning, but right on the edge. Not expecting more than a couple of inches of rain. In the area for possible power outages, but since I'm downtown in a high rise apartment building with power coming in underground, it's not likely we'll lose power. And if we do, it always ends up coming back right away because it's a priority to have power returned to State government offices.
I am across the street from a park with huge old oak trees--more than a hundred years old--some higher than the 5th floor where my apartment is located. Some of those tree tops are starting to sway. We probably won't get wind gusts more than 40 mph, but we often get wind gusts almost like that during serious thunderstorms. Although with Dorian, we could get bands of those gusts coming through for several hours.
Our building management required us to bring in everything off our balconies. All the outdoor furniture around our roof top pool (23rd floor) has been put inside,as well as the furniture on the side where the outdoor grills and firepit are located. The inside lounge area on that floor is completely stacked with outdoor furniture.
Had Snowy (my dog) out a little while ago. Expecting our first rain bands soon.
I should have a pretty good view of the clouds racing by--blowing in from the northeast--as I am located on the northeast side of the building.
This is as close as I want to get to a hurricane!
It is looking not good for my favorite beach here in NC--Emerald Isle--especially if Dorian makes landfall near Wrightsville Beach. A lot of the beach areas are under mandatory evacuation. I heard earlier this morning that it's quite possible the path of Dorian will take it right over Emerald Isle. Haven't checked recently, but hope that doesn't happen and it stays off the coast.

(4,649 posts)and I lost power for only 5 minutes! Another hour of rain and my home would have been flooded for sure.
