The Scots spell it whisky and the Irish spell it whiskey. It gets a little fuzzy in other countries, but proper spelling is very clear in Scotland.

My wife is European, but my brother's wife is a Shinto Buddhist Japanese, and we had our double wedding in Virginia.

I don't remember being asked anything of the sort. The only thing that caused a moment's confusion was when we were at the Arlington County Courthouse applying for our marriage license. For "Place of birth," the form only had places for "city" and state." No space for country. So when we got to my wife's info, we filled in the city as "Quakenbrück" and the state of "Niedersachsen."

When the clerk read through it, she paused at my wife's city and state of birth, and asked, "is that Germany?" Expecting a barrage of questions and supplemental forms, we said, "yes." She nodded and said, "I thought so." End of story. Maybe they just weren't feeling like being difficult that day, but my brother never said he had any such problem with his wife, either. So, maybe there are some parts of the rules that are traditionally ignored by the Virginia authorities, especially when they are about half a century out of date.
