When she was a guest artist at Indiana University in the early '80's. I worked costumes for the ballet that She and Patrick Bissell starred in. Both were Coked up beyond belief for many rehearsals - Patrick lost his balance on some fouette turns, and crashed into some chorus members, injuring some.

All anyone could say was, What a waste - did Balanchine push her to this? Did Baryshnikov? Was she doing this to keep her weight down?

Bissell got arrested for smashing a bottle of wine on the front desk of the Student Union where they were staying.

While not every ballarina goes through this - more than one dancer wrote a book about the hell it was working under Balanchine.

One of my best friends is a Very Famous Dancer and that was the snotty joke when the book came out (though all agreed Ballanchine was a misogynist shit).
