"Asked to Resign"

OK, someone explain why, when someone in government is fired, they're "asked to resign". What's the point of asking someone to resign?

If someone came to me and asked me to resign I'd tell them to take a flying leap, if they don't want my services anymore they can fire me. What's in it for me if I 'resign' instead of being fired. Either way I'm out of a job, in the case of tRump as a boss he'd be repeatedly running me over with the bus anyway.

For their next job the person can say they resigned instead of being fired. They just need to come up with a reason/excuse. Being fired implies ineptitude or being John Bolton.
