Michael Bloomberg is slamming the FDA for contributing to the epidemic of teen vaping in the U.S. The billionaire philanthropist announced Tuesday that his non-profit, Bloomberg Philanthropies, is pledging $160 million to fund a new program aimed at ending vaping among teens. It follows a new study that found flavor was the reason most young adults said they started using e-cigarettes.
When asked on "CBS This Morning" whether he blames the FDA, Bloomberg said, "yes is the answer to your question."
"You don't let the public do something while the science says it's probably bad for you and you're in the middle of conducting research," Bloomberg continued. "Wait until you do the research. If it's no problem, no harm, no foul."
Bloomberg was joined by Matthew Myers, the president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which will be responsible for coordinating the push.

(82,849 posts)Despite denials from the vaping manufacturers, they've been actively and heavily promoting their product to young people. There are the official denials from executives, but the fact is plain to anyone watching: Vaping is advertised for teenagers, millions of dollars are spent annually to recruit the next generation of vapers and smokers. If the advertising was ineffective, it would stop yesterday.
The FDA has a history of being susceptible to intimidation. It used to be that the FDA would stand firm against manufacturers, and would buckle under congressional pressure. Manufacturers have found it more efficient to push the FDA around directly, only calling in members of Congress if the FDA wasn't pliable enough quickly enough. Vaping manufacturers have also trod the path first blazed by the tobacco industry (indeed, some of the same players are in both camps) in denying that their product is subject to regulation by the FDA, since it isn't ingested by users.
So, some manufacturers make a lot of money, some people get very sick, a few people die, and the public shrugs because whaddyagonnado?

(10,178 posts)teens have been smoking it for years. Same with alcohol. This entire vaping hysteria is just that---hysteria.

(50,554 posts)It's a lot easier to get caught by your parents if you consume nicotine in a form that makes you stink as bad as cigarettes do.
All I was saying was that Bloomberg has been involved in these matters for a long time.
Happy elimination day.
