Recent computer problem and solution...

...So about a week ago Firefox dropped their update to version 69 on me/us and I immediately began having problems with the DU website. I got a lot of "page expired" notices when using the "back" function and DU was the only site I had the problem with.

I did some searching for a solution and didn't easily find one. During that process I noticed that
I wasn't using any space for cache. Hmmm, I said to myself, could it be that the changes I made in Firefox about:config settings to minimize cache size could be the problem? And it turns out that was IT!

I dug out my notes (I recommend keeping notes, it's can be useful for more than satisfying
Obsessive-Compulsive behavior) and changed my cache settings back to the original. Wow!
Now things work like a dream and I'm embarrassed about the snarky message I sent to Firefox Help.
Memory isn't something that's only important in a computer, it helps if the operator has some too!

which, two weeks ago, simply dropped off the 5G band (Netgear Nighthawk), though the 2.4 G band works fine. It irked me because the latter is considerably more congested in my area, causing some streaming stalls.

I googled this and found this to be a not so rare problem, usually occurring after a firmware update (not sure that was the case for me) and dating back to at least 2013. While my router is out of warranty, I decided to use the chat troubleshooter with Netgear, which ended up having me chat-talk with three different techs, make all kinds of channel and setting changes for a total of three straight hours. All that was accomplished was making 5G intermittently discoverable, but none of my devices could ever connect.

Of course, they gave up and said my router was not under warranty so...

I am still not convinced, given the number of accounts on various NetGear forums that have suggested this problem occurring back many years and suggestion it is a firmware issue. Noted, not one tech suggested this to be an issue and I don't have access to any prior firmware versions to "rollback" in order to test it.

Five hours and nada. I guess I will optimize 2.4 G band as much as possible (channel switching) and wait it out until reviews of new models come out and I find a good price.

I'm not a Luddite, but wasting a day problem-solving tech issues for naught irritates the hell out of me. Glad you were more successful.

I try to be optimistic and figure that a wasted day is just another step on the way to success!

Here is where you can find the previous firmware versions, if you decided to test them: Link

It's Netgear's page for the R8000 triband. If that's the wrong one, you can just search for your model and then follow the same steps.

I have been getting the continual upgrade notification and have refused to install it - mainly because it is a "xx.0" version and they will ultimately come out with some bug fix "xx.01" version soon. I don't like upgrading to ".0"s and in this case, I did look at some of the changes and they included this mention -

Firefox no longer loads userChrome.css or userContent.css by default improving start-up performance. Users who wish to customize Firefox by using these files can set the toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets preference to true to restore this ability.

I use a custom userChrome.css to round my tabs (and other things related to how the browser looks) and to have to go through the extra hassle of turning that back on was a deal-killer for me right at the moment. I did however see one tech site that claimed that this feature change supposedly only applied to "new installs" and that installs that were already actively using the feature would not be impacted... But I'll wait... I usually want to set aside time to check for and re-tweak any alterations after an upgrade.
