Thoughts and prayers for those who vape

Last edited Thu Sep 12, 2019, 05:06 PM - Edit history (1)

obviously the best solution to the problem of any dangers to vaping.

Though 6 deaths is an awfully compelling reason to act. Not like it's 30,000+ annually.

To clarify, this post isn't about vaping, it's about guns.

As it became popular among young people the govt looked closer at it. In a widespread propaganda campaign they spread the word that taking LSD causes chromosome damage. They showed graphic pix of birth defects and warned us that this would likely be our offspring in the decades ahead. The govt's proof was that some people who may have dropped acid also had abnormal births, and the public demanded action to save the hippies from themselves.

It made passing laws easy among a Congress ever fearful of and for the future of youth. Let's not forget "Reefer Madness" of the previous generation either. The deadly ravages of marijuana cannot be ignored.

Sure, the govt lies to meet their own goal, but then again, I always blamed things my oldest son did as a teen on the microdot I took at that Moody Blues concert. hahaha

They told us we can be driving down the street years in the future when a flashback occurred and we drove off a cliff because we thought our car can fly. That certainly put an end to the Pontiac Linkletter Sedan.

"Timothy Leary's dead..."

"...the little man that sells you thrills along the pier..."

Doesn't sound very flattering to me.

Like Pink Floyd*, the Moodies had a reputation for being a bunch of whacked-out acidheads, and I don't think they much appreciated it. Though they didn't want to come right out and say it and appear "square".

*With the exception of Syd Barrett, of course.

.

He would guide people on LSD trips, teaching them how to use it safely while they expanded their minds. All things went south then Art Linkletter's daughter tried LSD and then leapt to her death 6 months later. He blamed an LSD psychosis for her death and pressured politicians to crack down on its use.

While Moody Blues said that this song was taking a piss, that was well after Timothy Leary revealed himself to we a whackadoodle.

Legend of a Mind is one of my very favorite Moody Blues songs. It pretty much showcases everything that made them so great, musically and lyrically.

Ray Thomas, poet, singer, and flautist, was a beating heart in that group. I know his bandmates appreciated that. It's sad that he didn't survive to see them all inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I did it hundreds of times back in the '70s when it was intense, not this blotter nonsense. I often took a full four way hit of Orange Sunshine or Blue Owsley with no lasting effect. I finally quit when life became more complicated and it wasn't fun anymore.

It never hurt me.

The current issue with vaping isn't whether it has long term health effects or not, that is unknown as of now. The current issue with vaping is that because there is not testing around the quality of the ingredients being used, contaminated ingredients are going around that are killing people and making hundreds of others gravely ill.

It's like someone is saying, "Hey, we're going to ban some brand of children's vitamins right now because enough of them have been contaminated with poison that 6 people have died and several hundred others are really sick."

They're banning them until they can figure out what the heck is going on that is killing people. This industry was unregulated for too long, the chemicals were being brought in from China with little to no over sight or quality controls. This isn't like banning them because like cigarettes they cause long term negative health effects (although they may).

If you continue vaping right now, you're at risk of being poisoned and dying, not 15 years from now, not 25 years from now, but almost right away. And if you don't die after inhaling these tainted liquids, you could suffer irreparable damage to you lungs.

Indeed, scientists are still puzzled as to what substance is causing it. There's no common thread other than the victims all vaped weed at some point. It's possible they all drank a Polar Pop from Dairy Mart too, but I don't want the government to ban iced soft drinks out of an overabundance of caution.

Without actually admitting to a crime here, I am compromised with emphysema and have suffered two near fatal bouts of pneumonia in the past, and I'm statistically still here.

I will cede that it may be because basement chemists are bootlegging cartridges with unknown ingredients.

Is this problem with cigarette vapes or medical marijuana vapes(or both)? I saw you reference to "they all vaped weed". I vaped mmj for the first time last week but assumed they were safe given the source and that there have been no death/illness reports from my area.

And neither are the researchers from what I've been reading about it.
I'm no scientist, but it's possibly a problem with kitchen labs making their own cartridges with unknown chemicals.

Still, the base problem is people see teens vaping more and more and don't like it. The govt response in such a case has historically been to lie to them about the dangers then apply a legislative hammer to the problem.

They simply are still doing the science which takes time, but they see more than enough strong evidence that vaping is causing these deaths and illnesses to advise the public that they should cease vaping right now. This stuff takes time to come to a definitive conclusion, but they aren't telling the public to stop drinking pop from Dairy Mart.

And as someone who's seen with their own eyes how barrels of these ingredients get mixed in basements of store owners, it's not safe and not regulated. As it is now, someone can call their basement a lab and market their products as manufactured in XYZ Lab.

And what I think is absolutely insane is that marijuana legalization proponents worked tirelessly for decades to get weed legalized on the basis that it's natural and harmless are now seeing their work suffer because people decided to mix weed with chemicals from who knows where so they could vaporize the substance into their lungs. Edibles, or straight up oil you know how is made.

You can also vaporize weed without using chemicals and oils, that has been around for a long time and pure and safe.

the fact that there's vaping and there's vaping. I use a simple tank and battery that I fill with liquid. It's cylindrical. Then you have these guys with those square "mods" that help you blow a sh8t ton of smoke. I don't know anything about that side of things, but I was interested to see that when our local paper showed a haul some high school confiscated it was all those smoke blower things. Since all the people I've heard about getting sick have been young men (I'm am sure there are a few others), I kind of wonder if they're using the old Kanger Evod or some exponentially more powerful stuff.

And that's why it's so hard to nail down what's making people sick. But I think the real problem is the fact that young people are taking up vaping either weed or tobacco and the govt response is to quash it now with a huge legislative mallet.

Vaping, like smoking, has been branded a disgusting practice by many. I certainly don't expect Trump to take a nuanced solution.

It's especially handy at concerts where I can't smoke anything any more. Lighting up now brings security in double time. However, the general public consensus seems to be negative. I believe that's the whole point of this OP.

Plus, no one likes to see kids "smoking" anything these days. I think that's really why action is being taken..
