Hispanic voters a priority for Trump campaign
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
In four days, President Donald Trump will visit New Mexico. And one of his main focuses -- the Latino vote. "We want them to come out, we want them to hear our message," said Liz Harrington, a national spokesperson with the Republican National Committee.
After Trump's visit to El Paso, Texas, in February, his team says they learned a lot about Latino voters-- and believe those voters want what Trump preaches. "When you see Democrats calling for open borders, and decriminalize illegal border crossings, and abolishing ICE, these are radical extreme ideas that Hispanic Americans and really all Americans will reject," Harrington said.
KOAT's political expert Brian Sanderoff believes (Trump) getting the Latino vote in New Mexico, a state that is predominately Hispanic, is going to be hard. "The Hispanic vote in New Mexico typically votes Democratic," Sanderoff said.
The day of Trump's visit, Sept. 16, also happens to be Mexican Independence Day-- which some immigrant advocates believe was intentional. "These are classic taunting tactics," said Eduardo Esquivel, with the New Mexico Dream Team. "They want to rile people up, they want to upset people."
