He gets all his news from television; and when Trump ran for president initially, believed Teflon Don's lies. He cannot afford a computer and lacks internet access to other news sources.
A couple of weeks ago, he overheard my next-door neighbor - another veteran - and I discussing Trump's cutbacks, which endanger the lives of millions of US Veterans and joined the conversation long enough for me to see he was uninformed.
Before Trump's recent visit to New Mexico, he was still in the dark, but talked to a few other Hispanics, who enlightened him.
He was unfamiliar with ANYONE, who is running against Trump for president; so I used my computer to introduce a few candidates - especially one, who's name I cannot mention in this forum. He was impressed by these caring people.
Today, he said he will not vote for the liar again!

I caused him to laugh with an old joke he had not heard, saying:
No, you use your eyes! You can tell Trump is lying, if his lips are moving!

Unfortunately the ignorant put Trump in office. And Im using the correct definition of ignorance, not the insult version.

(4,316 posts)and was going to read it when I had time, as I am curious how come so many Hispanics vote for Trump. I think many are Catholic and are single voter issue of anti-abortion. Many are anti-immigration themselves.

(14,173 posts)They take their anti-abortion stance seriously. at least for that 40% or so, it is as important to them as the Christian evangelicals. And Trump and the Republicans know how to milk that vote.

(8,282 posts)Many are anti-immigrant for the same reason that Archie Bunker didn't get along with Meathead. (Or why the older white Americans didn't support Vietnam protestors, despite the fact that white Americans were getting killed in Vietnam)
It's a generational thing, not a "my people" thing.

Following reliable news closely because of changing developments is more important than ever in these times. But good luck with that, people grab junk news on TV as easily as they resort to quick, convenient, cheap and unhealthy food.

(61,588 posts)I have no idea why this particular individual chose to support Trump, but in general, in my life, I've observed that Catholics and Latinos are less likely to be sexist and homophobic than white evangelical Protestants.

(53 posts)A couple days ago I was at a small local airport in Southern Georgia, among several white businessmen from the deep south, waiting for a chance to get some flying time. One of them was verifying a student's pilot credentials and said "making sure you are not Hispanic, because according to our president you cannot be Hispanic and an American." One of them said; "Cannot wait until that man is out of office." My sense in the room was that the agreement among the group was unanimous.

(14,570 posts)both my Uber drivers were disgusted with Trump and intended to vote blue.
Of those attending the conference, I'd say a good two-thirds, maybe more, were also disgusted with Trump and intend to vote blue.
One thing that was alarming to me - funding for programs my agency runs comes from the non-military discretionary pot, and two presenters, executives of national and large-state organizations, mentioned during their presentation that our programs are doing well this year 'because Ivanka likes them.'
No shit.
NATIONAL POLICY and funding for national programming is OK another year because Ivanka likes it???
I had some serious difficulty not hijacking the whole discussion around my indignation that our totally unqualified 'first daughter' has ANY say at all in national policy and funding.
To my credit, I suppose, I did not. But in terms of the rest of the content - there's really no policy direction from this administration at all, so it is up to locals and states to advocate for what they need.
What the blue-fuck has happened to sanity? And policy continuity?
We are going to have a lot of clean up to do after this sewer of an administration is kicked out.

(22,112 posts)Barbie doll ivanka has any say at all in policies and/or funding...if I recall, her name wasn't on any ballots (including her ignorant husband too)...I think personally, rump is putting all of his family in there so he can rip the government off even more, e.g., pay each of them salaries of 5 million, etc. etc. etc.
You're right. We are going to have a mess to clean up, but rump will be out of office by then and also, we'll be going after the crooked family right and left, as well as other scumbags that rose out of the swamp too.
I'll enjoy that part immensely.

(14,725 posts)their priest that the Dems are baby killers and a vote for them will send them to hell after death. So much for the separation of church and state. When it was much easier for my housekeeper to take items to her very poor family in Mexico, I used to give her clothes and other items to take on her biannual visits. When she stopped being able to go and I found out she was giving the items to the thrift shop at the Catholic church, I made her promise to give them to others and not the church or they were going to Goodwill. As a woman I despise the RCC but their subjugation by faith of people adds fuel to that disgust.
