So the call lasted thirty minutes and the transcript such as it is only lasts 11 minutes. So Trump outdid Nixon by one minute!

And we all know how that turned out.

FBaggins
(26,714 posts)You're talking about someone reading the memo out loud and deciding that's how long the call must have been?
That's nonsense.
Whiskeytide
(4,459 posts)... certainly be a margin of error when reading the memo out loud, it would have a hard time amounting to 19 minutes longer than an 11 minute read out.
I assumed initially that it was likely due to translation delays during the call - but other posters are saying that Zalenski is fluent in English. Perhaps that's true. I don't know. He may also have preferred to do it in Ukrainian from his end for his own note takers and recording purposes - so that might explain it even if he is fluent in English.
While odd, this is likely not a big deal. But I guess it's good for a few laughs and eye rolls. At least until more comes out about it.
FBaggins
(26,714 posts)The transcript is almost exactly 2,000 words long. Whoever performed this exercise was talking very fast (~180 words per minute). A normal conversational tone is ~125 WPM (which would make the transcript 16 minutes long), but it slows substantially for two participants over a 5,000 mile connection where neither is particularly fluent in the language. 30 minutes is plausible for this transcript.
but other posters are saying that Zalenski is fluent in English.
Also nonsense. He is "fluent" compared to most Americans' third language... but he was quite halting in his speech even when reading from a script yesterday.
This whole thing is based on a common misunderstanding re: how calls are memorialized. People are assuming that this is like Barr's summary of the Mueller report and just reflects the portion that the administration was willing for us to see. That's incorrect. There's no indication that this is anything but the original classified document.
Farmer-Rick
(10,134 posts)Traitor Trump has never, and will never, provide the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
You can bet your life that this is Not the original full transcript. There is something missing and it is even worse than what this short little write up has in it.

(15,058 posts)Need to know exactly how long it takes to read something so that it fits the time slot There are programs that can make this calculation. That is how they figured out that there is a lot of stuff missing.
FBaggins
(26,714 posts)This was just some guy thinking he could just check how long it took him to read it... and then jumping to conclusions.
There's no need for a "program". 2,000 words in 11 minutes is very fast. With one of the participants being a non-native speaker who clearly speaks English but is in no sense "fluent"... it's impossibly fast.

The 'transcript' is a written recollection of what was discussed by third parties, not what was actually said.

(2,574 posts)The conversation as presented seems like another Trump fantasy ("world leaders think Trump is great" and all in Trump's signature (limited) vocabulary. The whole transcript seems edited/created by Trump himself.
