I don't know why it would be a neighbor issue during normal work hours. From the standpoint of the grass on the other hand, its probably a bad idea because the sun has hardly hit it and so its covered in dew and it will mow unevenly clump, etc. This is even worse in late September with the heavy dew and cooler nighttime temps.

What’s Wrong with Lawns?

You may have guessed that given how many resources people pour into their lawns to keep them green, they aren’t actually that green in practice. In order to keep lawns green, lots of water is used. Many lawn owners also use harmful pesticides and herbicides on their grass. These toxins can end up in our waterways and in our food. And lawn maintenance releases greenhouse gases, such as with the fuel needed for lawnmowers.

I lived in Atlanta more nights than not while my sister was sick. I lost count of how many times I'm running round her yard with the mower at barely light (early or late) trying to get the yard cut before it was too high to do with that mower.

When life gets that sort of stressful you gotta do what you gotta do. At some point one of the neighbors realized what was happening and came by and offered to cut it with his rider when he cut his. We paid him a few dollars and kept him in gas money too.

But never say never

Well, she was never the one to mow the lawn before and the people who make sure the rules are followed ( neighborhood Nazi's ) complained that the lawn was getting long. Not having money at the time, trying to deal with three children who just lost their father, and none of her friends were able to get there so she took the lawn mower out at 4am and mowed her damn lawn. Oddly enough a neighbor started to mow her lawn for her until she was able to financially take care of it herself.

Tell your neighbor wet grass tends to cut less cleanly, resulting in larger clippings. These wet clippings clump together and block up the mower's deck. You should wait until the grass is dry enough so that you can walk through the lawn and not have wet shoes.

89. I'm a little surprised by the responses in this thread.

I'm neutral on whether 8:00 a.m. is suitable for noisy yard work. My neighborhood bans it before 7:00 a.m. Monday-Friday and before 8:00 a.m. on the weekend. Everyone seems to abide by that. I live in Florida. In some parts of the year it can be flat out dangerous to work outside in the middle of the day if you aren't acclimatized to it and take the proper precautions.

What surprises me is the seeming lack of awareness or sympathy for who might be trying to sleep at 8:00 a.m. on any given day.

Health Care
Fire and Police
Retail and Restaurant
Entertainment
Shift Work in many industries
The sick and injured
Parents of a newborn or sick child who was up all night

There are a huge number of people whose legitimate need for sleep could be impacted by a rule that favors the Monday to Friday 8:00-5:00 weekday "norm." Which means there is no good time for noisy yard work that wouldn't impact someone, so no easy answer to this.

I'm inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt. There are legitimate reasons to get yard work done in the early morning hours and there are legitimate reasons to be trying to sleep late into the day. Sometimes we just have to deal with life's annoyances and move on. We can't make everyone happy or nothing will get done. We practice as much compassion and consideration as possible, and that's about all we can do sometimes. We're still going to inconvenience and bother someone no matter what decision we make.

when there's time and good weather. But I'd love to see neighborhood accords where we all picked the same day to get the mowing done, so we could have several quiet days in a row.

95. I'd be happy if my neighbor mowed her lawn at all.

Or did anything to keep up her yard and our shared double-wide driveway. But, she doesn't. My neighbor on the other side sometimes mows early in the morning or in the evening, sometimes after 8 PM. He works, and those are the times he has available to do that stuff. I don't complain about it. I can sleep through a lawnmower sound if need be.

What I don't like is the neighbor two doors down, who owns a drag racing car. His favorite time to tune it up is at about 9:30 PM. That always seems to involve running the engine at high RPMs multiple times. At least there's another house between him and me, but it's still outrageously loud.

Neighbors do weird stuff. They don't do it all the time, though, so I leave them to their idiosyncrasies.
