I keep stumbling over the term "executive privilege"

Nefarious dealings behind closed doors that negatively affect those 'outside'?
"Gotta protect ourselves, you know? There'd be panic on the streets if they knew."

Or completely open the doors, turn on the lights, and hold no secrets?

It does have important reasons for existing.

But, like a/c privelege, it is normally pretty narrowly defined and is not supposed to be used to obstruct justice or cover up for crimes.

Presidents do tend to stretch it a bit when being probed by a hostile congress, but Trump & Co are trying to cover an elephant by 'stretching' a napkin over it.
