I've been waiting for the Lonesome Rhodes moment, but hadn't thought of it in this context. Could be!

Elia Kazan got great performances out of all the actors in this 1957 gem

He is that incredibly good in this movie. Just unbelievable.

But he was still an up-and-coming actor, so, of course, he was ignored.

I am grateful that he was able to channel his considerable talents into The Andy Griffith Show--which is still a classic, is still widely available for viewing in multiple streaming formats, and is still laugh-out-loud funny after nearly 60 years.

Other movies in 1957 included "Witness for the Prosecution," "Bridge Over the River Kwai," "The Three Faces of Eve," "Raintree County," "12 Angry Men" and "Sayonara."

Interesting aside: Tony Franciosa, who played "Joey DePalma" in "A Face in the Crowd," was nominated for best actor for his role as "Polo Pope" in the often-overlooked "A Hatful of Rain," a low-budget gem about addiction produced the same year. (Alec Guinness won.)

Character-driven drama performed by true masters of the craft.

Like you said, competition was tough.

That's a fascinating tidbit about Tony Franciosa. I never really thought of him as being that great an actor, to be honest. I didn't even remember him being in A Face in the Crowd, but it's been a while since I've seen it.
