Jeff Flake says 'at least 35' Republican senators would privately vote to impeach Trump

Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake made a bold claim on Thursday when he said "at least 35" GOP senators would privately vote for President Trump's impeachment.

Appearing at the 2019 Texas Tribune Festival, Flake, a frequent critic of the president, offered his own reaction and predicted that close to three dozen Republican senators would back impeachment.

"I heard someone say if there were a private vote there would be 30 Republican votes. That's not true," Flake said during a Q&A. "There would be at least 35."

Flake appeared to be reacting to longtime GOP political consultant Mike Murphy, who appeared on MSNBC Wednesday and suggested many Republican lawmakers in the Senate would support impeachment with a "secret ballot."

But I guess it is good to get a former GOP Senator saying it in public.

...now that he’s out of the Senate.

Of course, if he was still in the Senate, he’d probably denounce Trump passionately during the Senate trial, then vote to acquit anyway.

And who cares what they might do ”privately?” The vote wouldn’t be private. The only thing he’s saying is that lots of Senate Repugs would like Trump gone, but would never do anything on-the-record to anger his “base.”

No Lucy moment for me, thank you. I'll stick with continuing to insult republicans as unpatriotic until such time as they act like patriots.

Because if individual votes aren’t recorded that way, they’d probably all be thrilled to vote the Trump albatross out of their hair. I can’t imagine that a single one of them has any real admiration or affection for him. He is intolerable to anyone who isn’t stupid enough to actually believe Fox News.

Not 35 of the currently sitting Republican Senators. Not unless Mitch McTurtle told them to, and he won't.

End of a flaky discussion from the head flake.
