FauxNews pundit: Senate GOP will focus impeachment trial on Biden

I caught this statement from some unidentified right-wing talking head as I was channel surfing.

He predicted that once the Senate is tasked with holding a trial for Trump's impeachment, Moscow Mitch and other GOP senators will simply ignore the House's articles of impeachment against Trump, instead trying the Bidens.

For what? For mythical and unproven crimes that Trump and Rudy pulled out of their asses?

If they do, they'd only be confirming that the claims against Trump of abuse of power actually apply to the entire Republican Party.

What I do not understand is how they can live with themselves. How can they stand before me and tell me obviously bald-faced lies and expect me not to see them as vile contemptible? The only good thing about Republicans is that they are a living lesson in ethical morality and integrity from the point of view of what not to do.

3. I am sure they want to resurrect the "Benghazi!!!1111!!" tactic deployed by the old GOP House

but then trying to do that in an election year in the aftermath of an impeachment trial AND against someone who is not in any elective office, will probably backfire.

I.e., in the game they have successively managed to play many times, they have learned to ALWAYS initiate their attacks FIRST and immediately put their opponent on the defensive... That is how bullies operate - they punch a kid in the stomach and then when the victim tries to react by hitting back, the victim gets blamed with the nonsensical "It takes two to tango" argument from some authority and finds themself in trouble and punished for merely attempting to protect themselves.

But this time, the GOP were outsmarted and find themselves on the defensive side - and thus have the heavier burden to get out from under that without getting punished (which will be a fool's errand).

Those republicans trying to protect trump are knowingly compromising the country, and hopefully will pay for the consequences of those actions in 2020

but I'm not sure how much wiggle room they'd even have to do that. Chief justice Roberts runs the trial, not ol' Moscow. They all say publicly what a political windfall this is, how dumb Democrats are for falling for it, etc. But i believe they really don't want to have to vote, on record, IB whether to save his presidency or not.

...and a discussion this morning on MSNBC with a pair of legal analysts didn't elucidate the issue much.

The one thing they agreed on was that the Constitution doesn't elaborate on the Chief Justice's duties and authority during a senate impeachment trial, but the Senate does have flexibility as to the process and proceedings.

Either way, if we're counting on SCOTUS SC Roberts to protect us from crooked GOP senators, then we're screwed from the get-go.

He might stop them bringing up something totally unrelated, eg Elizabeth Warren, but since the Bidens are named in the call, he'd allow them to talk about them all the time.

They have already decided to acquit him, so they'll use their time to attack an opponent. Being in the form of a trial, they can get away with even more made-up shit than usual.

As an indicator this is their intention, look at the political ad they've already put out. It starts "Joe Biden promised Ukraine $1 billion if they fired the prosecutor investigating his son’s company". Which is a straight-out lie - the problem with the prosecutor was that he wasn't investigating corruption, and Biden was the head of an international effort to get rid of that prosecutor who was allowing corruption. But they will repeat the lie, again and again, because sometimes it won't get challenged, and someone gullible but with ethics could get put off voting for Biden as a result.

They know Trump has already lost all honest American voters, so constant lying has little downside for them. But they can knock off a few of the voters who might otherwise vote for a Democrat, specifically Biden, if they muddy the waters enough with lies.

What we'll need to do is tie Republican senators to the lies and the support for the criminal Trump, so that they lose re-election, and the Senate flips to the Dems.

Just a reminder that Giuliani’s son works for the Trump administration...

Maybe he shouldn’t be talking too much about Joe Biden getting his son special favors when he has done the exact same thing.
