https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/10/24/with-wink-trump-asks-that-supporters-not-hurt-protesters-criticizing-his-rhetoric/The official transcript of President Trumps speech on Wednesday in Pittsburgh delineates his response to a group of protesters dryly.
Yeah, dont hurt him. Dont hurt him, please, Trump told the audience at the event. They dont know theyre dealing with very tough people in this room.
The audience laughed and applauded, according to the transcript.
Oh, they dont know who theyre dealing with, he continued. They dont know who theyre dealing with. They just dont understand. All right. Go home to mom."
More laughter.
Explain to mom that you tried to take on very powerful people, and many of them physically as well as mentally, Trump said. Thats not a good thing to do not in this room. Be careful. Make sure you dont hurt them, please. Thank you.
The powerful people in the room were attending the annual Shale Insight conference, an annual energy-industry event focused on fracking in the Marcellus shale basin, a region that overlaps in part with the key voting states of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Many of those in attendance comported with Trumps central-casting view of toughness a number of big guys in hard hats sat near him on the stage.

Germany had only had 15 years of democracy forced on a desperately poor and broken nation, though, failing from the beginning. Germany had been an overall technologically advanced and prosperous nation under strong authoritarian government before that, and the people had never known anything but rule by kaisers, so understandably many responded to promises to restore that.
America's a different reality.

(7,947 posts)People laugh, but they must be thinking he isn't making sense. Who is supposed to explain to mom? Who is "they"? Protesters? then suddenly "you" is the tough people in the room?
He communicates through kind of base emotion that comes across-- the contempt, the threat, the "we're tough guys together" camaraderie. And it's all in service to pumping himself up.
He isn't, well, a well-evolved person. He's all about antagonism, division. It's scary to think that he means so much to so many people, because he's so broken off and primitive in his emotions.
