CA-25: Alex Padilla says he's not running for Katie Hill's Congressional seat

Following several days of speculation that he might run for the District 25 Congressional seat scandal-singed representative Katie Hill is resigning, California secretary of state Alex Padilla said he is not throwing his hat into the ring.

“Over the last couple of days, you may have heard speculation about me running to represent the 25th Congressional District,” a statement emailed from alex-padilla.com said Wednesday. “I am touched and humbled by the encouragement I received to run. It would be an honor to serve in the United States Congress, but this is not the right time for me to do so.”

Within 24 hours of Hill announcing her plans to resign Sunday, Democratic State Assemblywoman Christy Smith, who represents roughly the same Santa Clarita district in Sacramento, declared her candidacy to replace Hill against a field of Republican competitors. Hill won the Congressional seat from Republican Steve Knight in last November’s midterm election.

Rumors that Padilla was also interested in running for the 25th have flown since Monday, but obviously the Democratic Party preferred unity behind a single candidate before Gov. Gavin Newsom sets a date for the special election to replace Hill.
