DECATUR, Ga. (AP) A former Georgia police officer convicted of aggravated assault and other crimes in the fatal shooting of an unarmed, naked man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison.
Robert Chip Olsen was responding to a call of a naked man behaving erratically at an Atlanta-area apartment complex in March 2015 when he killed 26-year-old Anthony Hill, a black Air Force veteran whod been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and PTSD.
Olsen, who is white, was convicted of one count of aggravated assault, two counts of violating his oath of office and one count of making a false statement. Jurors acquitted him on two counts of felony murder.
DeKalb County Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson sentenced Olsen to a total of 20 years, with 12 years to serve in prison, followed by eight years of probation.

(58,785 posts)though, that 26-year-old mentally disordered veteran would almost certainly still be alive. It wrongs everyone to require street cops to work alone.

(5,122 posts)Heartbreaking. Its a tragedy that we cannot rely on law enforcement to serve and protect. I have loved ones with mental health issues and it is wretched decision when they are not doing well, off their meds to ask for a wellness check. You should not have to think twice about calling the police to do a wellness check, but that is where we are.
Mr. Hill needed protection on that day. He was sentenced to death instead. All that nonsense about being in fear, from what? The man was stark naked.
I say if all these police officers are so fearful, they need not be in law enforcement.
