Heh... look at that - isn't that about the same % who pretend to be 'proper' Christians? Oh my!
This 1/3 wear their pious intransigence on their sleeves while advocating hate for other; they will claim those wishing for progress are demonic in their policy and practice. They are overwhelmingly people who promote division. LGBT rights, the rights of immigrants, womans rights, policies on people of colour, all have their rights diminished in the name of the far right fantasy uplands of a land that never was.

(22,026 posts)It's always baffling to look at the American landscape and see how many U.S. citizens have absolutely no idea about the fundamentals of our political structure. They read the Founding Documents but have no idea what the words mean.
At least 1/3 of American voters are really stupid. You can see it in every election cycle.

I hate to interrupt the Five Minutes of Self-Hate, but there's nothing to suggest that Americans are a particularly unique, or "stupid" species of
human.

(17,911 posts)Mortally dangerous for a liberal democracy. There's always the threat of democracy committing suicide unless it holds its citizens to a higher standard. Outside influence isn't even necessary as we become our own worst enemies. Institutions and safeguards are being stretched to the breaking point and Madison and Adam's greatest fears are becoming realized. Unless we change course in that respect, I fear we're doomed. The country will split eventually. I also feel that unless the rule of law comes down on these jackasses like a ton of bricks we're in serious trouble. If political power shifts in 2021, we can't afford to let this shit slide as we did in 2009. These people need to go to jail, if anything as an example and a warning.

(29,065 posts)You may want to re-read the post again -- I never said any of it was "fine", I merely said that the qualities noted were human, not unique to "Americans".
paleotn
(17,911 posts)and that's OK, or fine if you like, if we live in an autocracy of some kind. In that case, there's not damage done. My point is, liberal democracies can't afford it. By the simple nature of our system of government it's dangerous and we and seemingly every western democracy is seeing it play out now in real time.

(29,065 posts)We forget, sometimes, that we're still a relatively young country, and that other nations have experienced (and survived) extreme, negative regimes...I do think the Trump Monster is an aberration, one who's headed for a decided exit.
That's not to say we need not be vigilant about some of the scary
Right Wing elements beyond Trump we're seeing, both here and abroad, but it's not even near time to despair. I am, in fact,
very heartened by some of our strong progressive voices, both in the new Congress and on the campaign trail, so I believe the tide may well be turning in this country.

To prevent that from happening the 2/3 majority has to step forward and exert their power of democracy before they lose it.

(9,090 posts)avoiding uncertainty is a major motivator for authoritarianism -
and in iain mcgilchrist's book "the master and his emissary. the divided brain" he says the left side of the brain wants certainty at the expense of truth.
they point to sex on the wrong brain - when impatient satisfaction-demanding reproductive urges are diverted to/associated with brain functions that need to be patient and objective - like with logic, pushing for premature conclusion, finality, certainty
humans have been learning sex with the wrong hand, the hand connected to the left side of the brain, the wrong side for sex, emotion, orgasm. but we didn't start that way. early humans were 50-50 right and left and then about 100,000 years ago we became 90-10 right handed. was that because the right handed humans had more authoritarian tendencies and in times of conflict that was an advantage? brain characteristics that favored sex on the wrong brain authoritarianism are inherited, and until humans start up that simple lesson in sex ed we're stuck with the authoritarians

(29,065 posts)There's nothing particularly "American" about it, in fact we're probably lucky that it's only 1/3 instead of one half or more.
In this time of intense frustration, I understand the impulse to self-criticism, but I think it's important to keep it constructive.

(868 posts)we break the chain of stupid.
One candidate, Klobuchar I think, has put forth the idea of required
federal service. Because, I.M.H.O., at the time of the American
Revolution, there existed a large population of sympathisers dedicated
to the Crown's goal of making us a subservient to the British Empire.
Just because those seeking freedom from these ties won, us, the good
guys, the advocates (republican surrender monkeys, each and every one)
continued efforts to serve the Crown. Left unchecked as they were, they
bred their discontent generation after generation.
And what do we have now? Most people go to work. Relying on their
job performance and pay checks to better themselves and those around
them.
While other folks strike out on their own. With reliance upon their wits
and efforts to survive. Income was realized from hunting, farming or
other non-formalized employment. Which only deepened the drive
of individualism.
As the population grew more reliant on society as a whole and contributed
to societies growth and its success. Whereas, the Crown Loyalists
(individuals/entrepreneurs) sought to retain every penny they got their
hands on while limiting their contributing to society to the point of relying on
society to pay their way in one fashion or another.
Recall the arrogant notion foisted upon us by the Crown Loyalists
(republicans) that, "through their hard work, individual and/or entrepreneurs
are the job creators not the government." That the American Government
NEVER created a single job remains one of the biggest, if not THE biggest
lie the republicans ever told Americans.
There are few jobs, if any, that exist that cannot be linked directly to
societal (governmental) creation. The government funded the development
of every technology we have witnessed. The government has paid for each
and every highway and road that provides for the transportation of all
goods and services. The government educated the population and work-
force of this country.
The Government, for the majority, means each and every one of us
that pay taxes to support its function and rely on its continuity and growth.
To the republicans, the government, us, you and me, firmly support
the idea of "I'm not in favor of abolishing the government. I just want to
shrink it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." (source;
Grover Norquist)
So it is a real easy choice;
Would you rather a voice in governance?
Or would you prefer to be "drown in a bathtub" by those (republicans)
who unapologetically live off YOUR contributions and taxes dollars made
to our government, while spending the same money, OUR money , to
promote the destruction of OUR society and OUR future?

(36,745 posts)They supported remaining as a British colony, which means Native Americans would have been treated better and slavery would have simply ended by an Act of Parliament. Many of them migrated to Canada and at this point, I definitely prefer their approach to life.
The British would not let settlers go west of the Appalachian Mountain divide because of potential conflict with Native Americans. They had that one right.
