Pelosi worried Dems on wrong track

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the General Discussion forum).

https://news.yahoo.com/nancy-pelosi-worried-2020-candidates-100000963.html

(Bloomberg) -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi is issuing a pointed message to Democrats running for president in 2020: Those liberal ideas that fire up the party’s base are a big loser when it comes to beating President Donald Trump.

Proposals pushed by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders like Medicare for All and a wealth tax play well in liberal enclaves like her own district in San Francisco but won’t sell in the Midwestern states that sent Trump to the White House in 2016, she said.

“What works in San Francisco does not necessarily work in Michigan,” Pelosi said at a roundtable of Bloomberg News reporters and editors on Friday. “What works in Michigan works in San Francisco — talking about workers’ rights and sharing prosperity.”

but I have a hard time believing that pushing the status quo is a winning strategey.

One reason for Trump's popularity is that people were desperate for change (better wages, affordable college, access to health care - not just insurance) and that made easy for them to fall for what he was telling him.

... disenfranchisement, gerrymandering, and straight out election theft.

If we nominate a strong candidate who fights for what is right, and that candidate loses, it won't mean that demonstrating strength and moral principle is a "losing" strategy. It means we failed to fight hard enough to protect the integrity of our elections.

A lot of people in rural areas don't have affordable health care. That's where many apparently turn to opioids or suicide. The situation may get worse as rural economies slow due to China buying farm products elsewhere because of Dumpy's foolish tariffs.

Amid Trump Tariffs, Farm Bankruptcies And Suicides Rise

Nancy sounds a bit like a millionaire San Francisco elitist who just does not want to pay another nickel in taxes. How much time has she spent on the ground in those Midwestern states?

On the other hand, it is indeed very complicated and needs more than a gnat's attention span to grasp. I thought AOC's explanation to Cuomo was a pretty good start.

Sun Nov 3, 2019, 01:02 AM
Nov 2019

In rural America. The RN shortage is here. The provider shortage is here. I’ve yet to see a single proposal from M4A proponents addressing this. Who is going to provide healthcare? Are we going to be able to earn what we are worth? When I wander in to work And meet blood and shit and infection and death and epidemic workplace violence, I’m not interested in feel good proposals that don’t have the literal infrastructure to back them up.

I don’t give a shit what it costs, I want universal healthcare to be workable.

Nancy Pelosi has common fucking sense.

is knowing that virtually every other advanced economy on Earth has some form of affordable universal health care and none of them claims to be the "richest country on Earth." That's not just "feel good." Facts like that are a big reason Republicans and other greed monkeys have tried for decades to keep Americans focused inward so they won't find out how things work in other countries.

You think anything resembling the current for-profit health care system is going to open new facilities out in rural areas where so few people, jobs, and PROFITS remain? Not gonna happen.

From FDR through Jimmy Carter we had a top marginal tax rate from 70 something percent to 92 percent. Reagan got it dropped more than half and now most anyone under 45 or so believe top marginal rates have never been high. Heck it was 91 or 92 % through Eisenhower’s two terms....and he was a Republican.

Of course Nancy is old enough to remember that.

... than any wishy washy, let's not demand what we think is right bullshit the establishment dems believe is the way to win.

Bill Clinton said himself

"When people are insecure, they'd rather have somebody who is strong and wrong than someone who's weak and right."

The only way to beat Trump's strong and wrong is to match it with bold strength, standing steadfastly for our REAL principles. You know, those principles that are expressed in the Democratic platform, that only the so-called "extremist" dems have the guts to actually fight for.

The "center" has moved so far to the right, people don't recognize the REAL middle any more.

If we don't draw some REAL lines in the sand and steadfastly stand up for what we believe in, the nation will just keep being pulled in the direction of the right-wingnuts who DO draw firm lines and refuse to waver, no matter how many people say "will never happe." (Like all the people who were sure abortion would never be banned -- that the extremists would never really make any headway. And now we have states where is it almost impossible for women who have limited resources to terminate unwanted pregnancy... and the basic right is seriously under threat nationally.)
