NEWSER) A man was released from jail Friday, only to find his wife had been killed the same day, likely by her own dogs, according to Ohio police. Dale Matthews says he called his son to pick him up from Warren County Jail, where he was held on a warrant for failure to appear for child support, after his wife failed to answer his calls. The pair then drove the 11 miles to her home in Waynesville, where they found 49-year-old Mary Matthews dead on the bathroom floor, according to a police report. Police responded to a call about a possible overdose but determined Matthews had likely been attacked by one or both of her Great Danes. Her body was "covered in puncture wounds and appeared to be missing a piece of flesh from her ankle," NBC News reports, adding walls of the home were coated in blood.
There was also a piece of flesh and a bloody baseball bat on a couch, close to which sat a pair of ripped and bloodied sweatpants, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. There was more blood on towels in the kitchen and on a glass door that led to a deck so covered in feces that the "actual deck could not be seen," per NBC. That was where police found the Great Danes, which were later euthanized, per WKRC. An investigator in the coroner's office tells the Enquirer that the dogs were "known to be aggressive" and had "bitten our victim in the past." As Dale Matthews said his wife usually consumed beer and prescription pills at the start of each day, authorities believe she failed to call for help after wrangling the animals and bled to death, perhaps unaware of the extent of her injuries. Police met the woman's husband and son in the driveway. Police saw bloody footsteps in the garage entryway into the home. Blood was found in multiple rooms, according to the report.
Mathews' was found dead by police in a first-floor bathroom near the front door, according to the report.
Her lower body had "Numerous cuts or puncture marks"
A baseball bat that was "heavily blood-stained" in the front and back was found on a living room couch. Grey sweat pants that were torn or punctured in "numerous places" that were heavily blood-stained were found on the living room floor.
Police documented signs of alcohol and prescription drug abuse.
Police found "two large but thin Great Danes" on a back deck off the kitchen.
"The deck was littered with dog feces to the point that the actual deck floor could not be seen," according to the report.
The chief dog warden, Nathan Harper and his deputy took the dogs to be held for bite comparisons, according to the police report.

(7,143 posts)Likely O/T, but Clearcreek Township is quite tawny. Here's the house where this happened:
Meanwhile, a couple dozen miles away, also yesterday:
3 injured, 1 critically, in dog attack at Pawsitive Warriors Rescue in New Carlisle
The attack happened around 7:45 p.m. at the animal shelter, 1833 N. Dayton Lakeview Road.

Rescue founder Molly Murray said the 2- to 3-year-old male pit bull named Mayhem was being taken to a veterinarian to be euthanized after he bit at least three people.
Murray said the dog showed no signs of aggression before Monday nights attack, and that he had been rescued from a drug bust along with a female and some pups.

(2,215 posts)Yeah, she was high off pills and alcohol and probably was numb to the pain to realize she was in danger. That deck though, gross. If anything, I feel for the dogs, that life wasn't a good one.

(33,261 posts)Maybe the baseball bat was "final payment" of child support, and the (possibly abused) dogs provided the cover.

(14,165 posts)the dogs were "very thin". Underfed and probably spent most of their hours locked into that closed patio based on the level of feces in there. Probably abused with that bat too.
I believe those dogs were not inherently bad, and could have still lived happy lives with competent owners. Domesticated dogs do not attack a human owner unless there is good reason for it.
