President Trumps longtime friend Roger Stone lied to Congress because the truth looked bad for Donald Trump, a federal prosecutor said Wednesday at the opening of Stones trial on charges he lied to Congress.
Stones trial represents the last case filed by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III in his probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and prosecutors wasted little time connecting Stones alleged crimes to the interests of the Trump campaign.
Minutes into the trial, prosecutors linked the charges against Stone directly to Trump, citing phone records that showed the two talking at key moments.
We are here today because one man obstructed Congresss investigation, prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky told the jury of nine women and three men at the federal courthouse in Washington.

(82,849 posts)I would have thought it would be the defense, not the prosecution, who would justify Stone's lying because the truth looked bad for Donald Trump. Nicely played, Prosecutor Zelinsky.
