the whistleblower should be "SUED for Treason." He said exactly that at his most recent chopper presser.
"SUED for Treason." He said that. A man that stupid is President of the United States.
Surely we can correct that in 2020, right, if not before?
I mean...really...

(4,473 posts)Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.
A major reason that the framers of the Constitution were explicit in their definition of treason stemmed from an incident during the reign of Henry VIII of England. One of Henry's political enemies, Lord Montague, was arrested and told the charge was treason. He said, "I have committed no treason." The arresting officer replied, "Treason is what the king says it is." The framers knew their history, and did not want treason to be whatever some governmental official said it was.
Trump, of course, knows neither history nor what the Constitution says.

(25,428 posts)Treason is so narrowly defined that the Rosenbergs didn't even qualify. If they don't, Trump's opponents certainly don't (or Trump, for that matter).
For one, we're not at war with anyone, certainly not Russian or Ukraine. Cold wars don't count, as the Rosenbergs case showed.

(10,252 posts)but his brain dementia couldn't find the word, "prosecuted." So he said "sued" instead. We need to redo the 25th amendmentment, so we can dump unfit, incapacitated people. When the cabinet and the VP are all a bunch of sycophants, the current 25th amendment is worthless. I say every POTUS needs an annual med checkup by a panel of 3 Drs. Exam to include a brain scan, and report publicly released.

(11,562 posts)He said exactly what his brain came up with. Lots of people have expressed that Dum-Dum tRump has a steadfast unwillingness to learn anything new. He already thinks he knows everything he needs to know and trusts his own instincts and interpretations. The entire presidency has been dumbed down thanks to him.

(10,252 posts)I'm pretty smart and test with a high IQ, have a college degree, am well read, etc etc. Believe me, when you get to be a Sr citizen, the body just starts not working so great, as when you were 30-something. I'm not making excuses for the fact that he is still a stupid, arrogant, degenerate asshole. But of all the things to criticize him for, getting words mixed up is at the bottom of my list. His constant lying and hate speech are much more egregious faults.
I suspect that he also wears dentures that slip a lot. He seems to mangle words that way too. For the most part, I don't listen to him, or read his tweets. I already know that his speech and writing holds nothing inspirational, or are of any beneficial value.
pandr32
(11,562 posts)...but we have no evidence whatsoever that Dum-Dum has made any effort to learn anything--including a word he doesn't normally use. Well, except for "quid pro quo" which he has been using a lot recently. It would be hard to know if he was suffering the beginnings of dementia. I think we will have to wait and watch to see if he forgets to put in his teeth as a clue.
As for forgetting a word now and again, I have done so often during my life for many reasons. Stress will do it, too, and most presidents have faced a considerable amount of it.
tRump has no problem remembering all his bullshit talking points and constantly adds new ones to the roster as older lies and stories unravel.
Don't get me wrong--I hope he has dementia. Add a whole list of other things to suffer with as well!

(146,262 posts)I'm not sure. The only legal process Trump understands is the lawsuit. He has filed so many of them and has been sued so many times, he might actually think you can sue someone for treason. The word, "prosecute" has three syllables - two too many for Trump.

incapacitated person from the presidency, even in an emergency situation. The 25th Amendment needs amending.
And IMO there should be consequences for those who found early on in their stay in the WH that trump was grossly incompetent, unfit and dangerous for the country but said nothing, did nothing but defend him and collect their paychecks.
Pence, Conway, Huckabee Sanders, Barr, Mulvaney, Pompeopeople of that ilk.

(48,965 posts)tRump is clever, not wise.
He is smart at two things: using other people's money and manipulating media.
He makes an outlandish statement, no matter how ridiculous, just so it gets media attention.
His base is dumb as rocks.

(15,637 posts)too many seem to believe. He's all about appealing to the amygdala through branding ... and way too many people who actually vote are enraptured with those appeals, his "brands". He's a master at branding. Already yesterday he was calling Bloomberg "little Michael". His use of the phrase "sued for treason" was purposeful, not sheer stupidity. He cares little or not at all about looking or sounding stupid.
BTW no criticism intended. I agree that: he is stupid relative to presidential material generally, and that we must correct that (as you said "A man that stupid is President of the United States"!!!!). I am just a bit scared that we are underestimating him still. I sure hope not.

(12,847 posts)Donald Trump is afflicted (and has afflicted all of us) with his mental pathologies and appalling ignorance, but the kind of rhetoric you cite is what he has successfully employed to win the Republican primary; to win the general election (with help from Vlad); and to maintain a base of support that loves him precisely because of his extreme rhetoric.
Reminds me of Adlai Stevenson's reply to an aide who said thinking people will vote for him: "That's not enough; we need a majority."
Although Trump's base is a lost cause, Trump has spewed racist and nonsensical rhetoric since before the 2016 election. Don't expect it to move the needle.

(14,165 posts)That is, we all thought Donald Trump was a great businessman and a terrible politician.
It turns out he was a terrible businessman but a very good politician. As far as keeping his base loyal and the news media following his every word.
Yes, its easy (and fun!) to mock Trump's seemingly ill thought out phrases like, "SUED for Treason". But while we're chuckling how stupid he is, somewhere else some ornery red cap wearing deplorable is nodding his head in agreement that its perfectly understandable. It matters more that they have a President, the one they voted for, who will fight back, stand up for himself. Maybe he doesn't use all the right words together, but dag nabbit, they know exactly what he's getting at.

(12,847 posts)It can be difficult for rational informed people to fathom that mindset, but it's what we're up against.

(14,165 posts)In that there seems to be this MO they work by which is to ASSUME everyone is just as smart as they are. Which can also be construed as speaking over the heads of people. That as long as you've researched every story from all sides, and are politically engaged, you SHOULD know that they are right, and the Republicans are wrong. That is the starting point they assume folks are caught up to them on.
That they don't need to over-emphasize the wrongs. And get it into a one line catch phrase. They are the calm collected, rational politicians who voters will respect if they just don't cause any waves, steer clear of any ideas that may seem too radical, and don't counter with their own sloganeering. They couldn't be more wrong. They may have been right years ago, but this is the age of mass information overload, and its a battle of branding. Republicans have known this for awhile now.

(12,847 posts)Let's remember that Donald Trump is a pathological liar with zero credibility.
The above phrase should preface every response from every Democrat every time they're faced with the latest mendacity from the Liar-in-Chief.
Let's remember that Donald Trump is a pathological liar with zero credibility.

(11,248 posts)Has Trump brought any NEW people on board with his gibberish? Yes we all know about the "base" .. but sooner or later you're going to need more than just the deplorables. Trump had a lot of those "others" in 2016. He has a LOT LESS of the them now.
Conventional wisdom already says that Trump lies almost constantly. The average voter is also starting to accept that he is just bat-sh*t crazy. And they're probably not going to vote for bat-sh*t.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,165 posts)But what is it?.....something like 90% of Republicans would vote for him again?
I think its obvious that it doesn't matter if he lies....(because so do all politicians they'll say )
It doesn't matter that he cheats on his wife. or pays off porn stars.
It doesn't matter that he makes rude and abusive comments to even decorated soldiers
It doesn't matter that he uses his office for financial gain, or hires his children and they use their position to also make money.
Heck, it doesn't even matter to his largest base, the evangelicals, if he's the first(?) President to say he doesn't need God, never has asked for forgiveness, because he doesn't think he needs to, never attends church, unless its for a photo op. And swears like a sailor.
Its call populism and populist for a reason. There is I think a big part his appeal in just how original, how entertaining, how disruptive he is to normal political news and the normal protocol of dealing with diplomacy. I think Democrats underestimate that kind of appeal they run against, despite Trumps flaws, if they think running the most establishment status quo, Washington-entrenched politician, will be a shoe in. Sadly, I think many voters, especially those that don't follow politics all that well, actually want Trump 2.0 just to see what he does. Just to watch the fireworks.
