Longtime Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) will not seek reelection next year, Fox News reported early Monday.

King said in a statement obtained by the network that “after 28 years of spending 4 days a week in Washington, D.C., it is time to end the weekly commute and be home in Seaford."

In February, King was among the GOP lawmakers on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “retirements to watch list” of potential targets ahead of the 2020 election cycle.

Rep. Peter T. King, a 14-term Republican congressman from New York, announces retirement

November 11, 2019 at 6:24 a.m. EST

King, a former chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, becomes the 20th House Republican to announce that he won’t seek reelection next year.

“The prime reason for my decision was that after 28 years of spending 4 days a week in Washington, D.C., it is time to end the weekly commute and be home in Seaford,” King said in a statement. “This was not an easy decision.”

This is a developing story. It will be updated.
