I always thought it was a march (or walk) to torture (the scaffold). Of course it was written in the 1800s.

At any rate, it was an interesting choice by NBC in the 1970s. I happened to be playing in a college orchestra at the time, and we watched the hearings on TV. I remember that we recognized and talked about the music. I had forgotten until Rachael mentioned it tonight.

but she also seemed genuinely surprised by how quickly the music was identified down to the specifically named movement. You have to think the choice of that music in 1973 for the Watergate hearings was deliberate.
