Locals pronounce it “Ooh-cry-eee-na” so it’s different from the English pronunciation regardless.

Just don’t call it The Ukraine.

And definitely don’t call it Russia.

The new controversy is how to spell and pronounce the capital city.

Until recently, most spelled it “Kiev” but that’s the older, more Russified spelling. Now more and more commonly spelled the local “Kyiv.”

Of course that doesn’t settle how to pronounce it.

Some go by “Ke-yev”, others go by “Kay-iv”.

My relatives insist on “Kay-yoo” which dispenses with the v altogether.

Regardless of the pronunciation, it’s a lovely city.

the Cheney family and it’s her maiden name. According to her it is pronounced Chee-nee.

I also pronounce Ukraine- u Kraine.
