(43,153 posts)Locals pronounce it Ooh-cry-eee-na so its different from the English pronunciation regardless.
Just dont call it The Ukraine.
And definitely dont call it Russia.
The new controversy is how to spell and pronounce the capital city.
Until recently, most spelled it Kiev but thats the older, more Russified spelling. Now more and more commonly spelled the local Kyiv.
Of course that doesnt settle how to pronounce it.
Some go by Ke-yev, others go by Kay-iv.
My relatives insist on Kay-yoo which dispenses with the v altogether.
Regardless of the pronunciation, its a lovely city.

English speakers generally have trouble with the rolled "r". Especially the French r.

I also pronounce Ukraine- u Kraine.
