"SNIP.....
President Trump asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to stop a prosecutors investigation of his personal finances, a bold assertion of presidential power that seeks a landmark decision from the nations highest court, the Washington Post reports.
The filing by the presidents private lawyers represents a historical moment that tests the courts independence and highlights the Constitutions separation-of-powers design. It also marks a new phase in the investigations that have dogged Trump throughout his presidency and have culminated in an impeachment inquiry.
The justices are not required to review the lower courts decision. But the chances that the high court will get involved increased Wednesday, when a separate appeals court in a separate case concluded Congress has a right to those same tax records.
New York Times: The case, the first concerning Mr. Trumps personal conduct and business dealings to reach the court, could yield a major ruling on the scope of presidential immunity from criminal investigations.

(7,411 posts)If the SCOTUS rules for Trump, then we're in deep trouble.
If the SCOTUS rules against Trump or defers to the lower court's ruling then it's likely Trump will simply refuse to follow through and dare Congress to do something. That would be the biggest Constitutional crisis this nation has ever faced, with the executive branch outright defying the legitimacy of the other two branches.
If he wins that standoff, then we cross the threshold into authoritarian state. We are already toeing it as is.

(9,999 posts)for whatever reason they deem appropriate. No definitive justification needed. I remember many legal scholars saying that when this first came up - months and months ago. Here we are, after all this time and now it goes to our biased Supreme court.

(9,999 posts)Seriously, why haven't the courts thrown this out? Am I missing something (besides the fact that nothing is normal anymore)?
