I was a little surprised when the major TV networks decided to provide live coverage of the public hearings.
But after thinking about this, it seems to me that just the basic fact of doing so increases their importance in the eyes of the general public and helps to legitimize the investigation.
Of course there is potential for various negative consequences too, but in my opinion it may well be worth the risk.

(586 posts)The repugs have been claiming that the investigation isn't legitimate. So just the fact that the TV networks decided that the hearings are important enough to cover live, it seems to me, will help make them seem more legitimate to the general public.

I think you mean does it help inform the public to a greater degree?

(14,489 posts)The public is divided into two camps (perhaps 30%/70%) and Republicans only believe info coming from withing their closed right-wing bubble. Their media minders and politicians will say it's illegitimate.
So, I feel it's well worth it to inform the 70% that still think for themselves.
It's 100% legit from day one, but it legitimizes from the standpoint of informing.
