NEW ORLEANS With less than a week in the campaign, it is now a sprint to the finish for Republican Eddie Rispone and Democratic incumbent Governor John Bel Edwards in the runoff race for Louisiana's highest office.
Looking at early voting, which ended last Saturday, there was a surge in black voting. African Americans accounted for 31 percent of the nearly 490,000 votes cast.
"In the early vote, we saw a significantly higher turnout among African American voters than we saw in the primary or in the primary's early voting," WWL-TV Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos said. "If that continues, that would help the governor, but it won't necessarily put him over the top."
Edwards needs to win 90 percent of the black vote and at least 33 percent of the white vote to be re-elected.

(1,713 posts)I have a close friend that is a teacher in New Orleans. He has lived there 24 years and says nothing ever changes. He fully expects the Republican to win and says through mayors, governors and Presidents, it's simply the same. I hope Edwards can pull this off. It would be an absolute catastrophe if Trump lost this one after last Tuesday

(1,660 posts)Have to carry the burden of voting 90 percent plus just for a dem to get in. And if he looses, white people will blame black people not the 66 percent of white folks who would never vote for the guy. Just makes me frustrated and mad.

Look where it's gotten Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas - they were among the poorer states 50 years ago and still are today.
