During Watergate the Republicans defended Nixon

With the lone exception of “Maverick” Republican Senator from Connecticut Lowell Weicker. Howard Baker’s famous question was designed to potentially be exculpatory but the tapes shifted the blame from the underlings to the President.

Younger folks: do not believe for one moment that Republicans sought the truth and justice back then. Only when it was obvious and certain that crimes were committed did they change their position.

I watched the vast majority of the hearings, both senate and House. You always knew who was questioning the witness.

I remember being just as outraged at the lies. Little did I know how bad it could get.

Always addressed him as "Mr. President." Refused to believe for a long time that Watergate could be true. Put herself on record with her dogged faithfulness in Nixon.

She only started to make those midnight calls to the Washington Post when there was sufficient evidence and she became more than disillusioned. It was akin to discovering there was no Santa Claus. She was devastated.

Martha woke up. The rest of the Republicans took longer.

reported that not only was Baker's famous question intended to help Nixon, but that Baker was actually a mole on the committee reporting back to the WH what was happening inside the committee. That was something I'd never heard previously.

their own party. Look at their moaning about the deficits over the years...now look at it, massive deficits, not one word since they the ones generating it via rump. Look at their moaning about needing tax cuts to stimulate the economy. The 2017 tax cut and jobs bill (which massively added to the deficit) did nothing to goose jobs and simply gave a tax cut to literally the repug donors and no one else. Moaning about our soldiers and the poor conditions they live in / the pay they receive, etc., they are stealing monies intended for veteran federally funded programs and rerouting it to build a 'wall' that Congress never intended. You could go on and on.

Pathetic behavior coming from a so called party of responsibility, eh? I want to take a few minutes here and go puke.

The deficit thing is purposeful and goes beyond just the surface level typecasting "liberals" for their brain dead base and the media.

They are massive "deficit hawks" when Ds are in power to hold back government funds and stifle the economy.

They literally could give a rats ass about it beyond wanting every possible tax dollar to be funneled to their masters.

Every single one of them lies through their teeth. The Rupert Murdoch network is their official propaganda machine that tells nothing but lies and the have their radio network of sycophantic assholes and the rest of the media that normalizes their bullshit.

The GOP suddenly became patriots when Nixon being a crook started to affect their poll numbers. They had no principles, they were protecting their political future first, their donations second, and their butts from going to jail if things didn’t stop.

Same as today. I keep wondering, “what individual Congress and Senate GOP members received cash?”

pretty liberal overall. When Joe Lieberman challenged him for Senate in 1988, Lieberman ran to his right and got a lot of votes from new "Reagan Democrats" and conservative Republicans.

Weicker quit the GOP and ran as an independent for governor of CT in 1990 and won
