antics; him getting irate, spilling milk all over himself.

The life of a cow. What should they be doing as a vocation?

(20,217 posts)us city slickers. We'd picnic there and I could hardly wait to go see the cows, venture into the fragrant barn, hug and smooch them. 😚
Yah, family farms. Things have been going to hell inna hand basket lots lately it appears.
Farming is expensive and laborious. Traditional farmers are having difficulties coming against them. But what about those who simply sell out for big $$. Their farmland is you know 'desirable'.
It's a vicious out there.

(25,586 posts)are revolting and cruel. Cows dont give anything, we take milk from them after removing their young to be raised in even worse conditions and then killed.
Give milk my ass.

(27,064 posts)They apparently think that adult female cattle just make milk forever for no apparent reason.
Unlike every other mammal on earth, who only lactate when nursing their young.

Cow milk is for baby cows, full stop.

(20,217 posts)Yeah, I know, humans weren't meant to drink milk and consume 'dairy' products sourced from 'milk'.

Dairys dirty secret: it's still cheaper to kill male calves than to rear them
Dairy farms need female cows to produce milk but with little demand for male calves many farmers cant afford to keep them beyond birth
"Dairy farms depend on female cows to produce milk, so when male calves are born, they are surplus to requirements and farmers are currently faced with few options.
They can immediately dispose of the calf, either by shooting it themselves or contracting a knackerman to do it [licensed slaughter business that will kill or collect dead farm animals]. They can sell the calf to be raised for veal or beef. Or they can sell the calf for live export. A few farms are experimenting with keeping the calves with the mothers for longer, but this is an expensive and rarely chosen option."

It shouldn't be this way.
Then everyone, "stop consuming meat and dairy products".

(9,440 posts)10 Dairy Facts the Industry Doesnt Want You to Know
By Ashley Capps | July 30, 2014
A few excerpts...
4. Even so, virtually all dairy calves are stolen from their mothers within hours of birth in order to maximize profit. 97% of newborn dairy calves are forcibly removed from their mothers within the first 24 hours. (3) The rest are removed in a matter of days. On so-called humane dairy farms, cows are often taken within the first hour of birth as separation of mother and calf is considered less stressful when they have not been allowed to bond (see video clip below).
5. To keep them lactating at maximum yields, cows are artificially and repeatedly and forcibly impregnated year after year. The constant cycle of forced pregnancy and birth creates a huge surplus of calves.
9. Trapped in a cycle of forced impregnation, perpetual lactation and near constant confinement, most dairy cows overworked bodies begin producing less milk at around 4 to 5 years of age, at which point they are slaughtered. (6) In natural conditions, cows can live 20 to 25 years. (7)
10. Of the 9 million dairy cows in the U.S., 3 million are slaughtered each year at only a fraction of their natural lifespan. (8) Their worn out bodies become ground beef and restaurant hamburgers. (9)
